Hi All,

I'm restoring an Iver-Johnson 20 gauge for my wife. It's an oldie and there is a bit of light surface rust on the receiver. Under the rust you can see the pretty blue and gold hues from the case hardening. Can I clean it up with oil and a light scouring pad without losing the color? If not, is there a way to save the look and the color?

Thanks.

*sigh...I wish I wasn't so impatient and waited for some CGN insight.

I started a couple hours ago. The first scouring pad I used wasn't doing anything. It was REALLY light. I found what I thought was a slightly coarser one and the rust and the coloring came off all at once. Boo.

Oh well, it's in rough shape; it's beat up everywhere. Dings on the metal and the wood. But it'll still be a good shooter, and that's all she really wanted anyway.

Just out of curiosity, did you mean Hoppes gun oil or a different product like a rust remover? Next trip to the store and I'm getting something since all of a sudden I seem to have the antique gun bug.

I have some of that! I didn't know it was for removing rust. I thought it was just to clean bores and remove powder residue.

Well, it is designed for as you say but it also does other things. It may not remove deep, permanent type rust but I have used it to remove lighter surface rust. It also works well for cleaning grime and dirt off of gun stocks. You just have to judge when enough is enough.

Thanks for the tip.

How's the weather in Winnipeg? I'm heading out deer hunting this afternoon in the middle of the first major snowfall of the year in NS.

Nah, it's pretty much a beater anyway. Someone had it apart and marked up the receiver knocking out the pins. The stock had some chunks out of it that have been filled with something that looks like dark brown epoxy or something. I was just going to save the coloring if I could.

Anyone know how that process is done? Just out of curiosity. I saw another thread where a guy did it to parts of a rifle he was building from scratch.

Maybe I'll Google it and see what info I can find.
