restricted newb, need AR15 thought's

If restricted status is a big turn off I would say to get a RobArms XCR.

They are more expensive but reasonable considering the cost of a base AR15 then add in flip up sights and a continuous (monolithic) rail and you can end up paying a lot more. The only thing I wish they had was a stock that both folds and collapses but then it would be restricted. It also takes all the picatinny rail accessories they AR15 can.

I agree with greentips that it would be better to buy a complete rifle then making your own right off the bat.

If you want a heavy contour (full auto rated) barrel look to CMMG, Questar has them at decent prices. One note while heavy barrels heat up slower they also cool slower than lighter barrels. If you also plan on adding accessories your rifle will only get heavier, keep that in mind.

A stock that both folds and collapses has nothing to do with the classification of a rifle. If said setup reduces the OAL to below the limit then its an issue. The design itself is not.

As for heavy barrel contours being FA rated. That's just wrong. The gov't profile is far from being a heavy barrel/contour and many a soldier(as well as others) run them FA without an issue. The only result most will see from a heavy barrel, is a heavy rifle. If you shoot from the bench its a non issue. If you compete or train its a major issue.

That's the reason I ditched the AR180B - the gas block is screwed on.

It was so ridiculous - in the earlier day, Armalite actually advised their customers to loosen up the screws on the gas block and wiggle it, if they found their rifles having cycling issue.

Hit the gas block hard, and the rifle will become a one shot wonder.

Yep. Luckily, I managed to fix the problem, and get the gas block on nice and tight (without stripping the screws :D), and it's been a dream ever since (300 rounds and not a single issue).

It's too bad that the Ar180 is essentially still in its first generation of design. With a few improvements, it could be a top notch black rifle.

Sorry about the miscommunication guys,

I forgot to include that the OAL can be reduced and that is what makes something restricted or not. It was not my intent to say that folding or collapsible stocks make something restricted. I just forgot to add the OAL. Thanks for correcting me TDC and mrsmitty.

I thought the OAL with a folding stock on an XCR would make it restricted? I've never measured it because my buddy owns the XCR. I'll have to bring a tape measure next time. Thanks mrsmitty.

TDC your right. Lighter barrels can/are full auto rated in AR15s. Not my intention to misinform. I agree with what you have to say that the extra weight is an issue if you train or compete. Having said that I also believe full auto is just a waste of ammo. Accuracy is final.

That's good advice..
+1

That's because I'm a good guy - and if I'm not drinking I don't tend to talk out of my hoop...

BTW - I'm 6'3" and 260, and I still far prefer the 16" over anything else, unless it's a 10.5 (for specific applications). Not that I can't handle my service rifle but 16" is a much better option...
