Hi there.

Just a quick newbie question. I have my restricted PAL. I am going to begin the process of joining a club soon (a bit more difficult as I am in Toronto). Can I buy a restricted firearm and get an ATT to just take it home (and keep it there) without being a club member? It's going to take a while to do the whole club thing and I'm looking to get a pistol soon.

Thanks.

I was under the impression that they would approve the ATT, but only to take the firearm to your place of residence. That is my assumption, nothing really to back it up at this point, but I am waiting for one so I shall let you know how it goes. Also I had a question I believe that you need to visit the club regularly in order to have the PAL renewed after is expires is this correct. Thank you for your time.

short term ATT to transport from the store to your home, or long term ATT wont be approved until you have a valid membership at a gun club. sucks balls, but those are the rules. I found out the hard way and bought my first restricted and had to wait like a week to get my range membership before transfer was approved. it took about 5 min after I got it though.

I had 2 handguns before joining a club/range. Just let them know you are looking at a few and will be joining soon. The ON CFO gave me no hassle at the time, about 3 years ago.

Same deal here. They are usually pretty reasonable about this (a rarity here in ON, I know).

Should be fine for Ontario. That is what I was told by instructor (go buy gun first, then join club). The club that I was thinking about joining won't even issue LATT without a handgun. I was so confused by all this. I read around here, it's okay to buy handgun in Ontario without belonging to a club for the purpose of target shooting. So that's good news, the process to get us noobs into target shooting is so slow. It would be good to stock up on what we want so no need to wait more once club gives you the green light.

I already ordered two Norincos M213 to be held for me until I get my RPAL. Couldn't resists. Sent out my appllication earlier in the week.

Also a newbie, thought this might be a good place to post this... Do the same rules apply to all restricted guns? I live in AB, and am looking to buy a restricted rifle in a week or two, but I'm not yet part of a club. After I got that rifle, I was definitely going to buy a Colt Commander sometime down the road, so knowing the rules regarding clubs and handguns would definitely be nice. Thanks!

Wrong order of operations. You will need to be a member of a club first or the CFO will not issue you the ATT for the restricted rifle

That's standard practise, the ON CFO won't issue long-term ATTs unless you own at least one restricted firearm.

Thanks. Is the AFSS a valid club to belong to in order to obtain an ATT for a restricted firearm? And once I do belong to a club, how do I get an ATT? Just phone the CFO and say "Hi, I'd like an ATT for a restricted firearm?"

If it's the same as a pistol they issue the LTATT at the same time as you are completing the restricted transfer (Alberta)

Actually, my club will apply for my ATT on my behalf.

Restricted transfer? Transfer of what? The gun from the shop to your hands? I'm sorry, like I said, I'm a newb. Can somebody translate? I'd appreciate it, thanks.

EDIT: That is, assuming I don't go with this silvercore club. The thirty bucks deal sounds kinda attractive.

The transfer of the registration from the store to you. The store initiates the transfer and when you call in to finalize it they will ask for a fax of your club card. (I am referring to pistols, I am not familiar with restricted rifles).

If you want to go the "associate membership" route you will need to find a place in Edmonton if that's where you live. Sivercore is in Delta, BC. IIRC. I think Wild West in West Ed Mall has them.
