Hey im taking my restricted PAl in may and I wanted to know if I still have to pay the 60$ fee to the gov when I send in the paper work. Iv had my non restricted PAL for about a year now.

The answer is no, you don't have to send in $60... instead you will send $80.
I know, I was surprised to read that too, but it's true. You actually save money if you apply for both PAL and RPAL all at once for some strange reason.

No you dont.

Fee waivers
You may not be required to the pay the fee for a licence for
non-restricted firearms if you need the firearms to hunt or
trap in order to sustain yourself or your family. This fee
waiver does not apply to restricted or prohibited firearms.
Please contact the Chief Firearms Officer of your province or
territory for further information.
If you have previously held a firearms licence under the
Firearms Act, do not enclose a fee.

---> from page 3 of form 921.

That's for a renewal sirrogue.
I just got finished upgrading my PAL to a RPAL like Davies is doing and it cost me $80. If you are renewing your PAL or RPAL I heard that up until May 08 the fee is waived, but I'm not 100% sure on that one.
There is no escape, since no one can hunt with a glock or an AR... even though it would be way fun!! They will get a pound of our flesh one way or another I'm afraid.

hate to tell anyone who disagrees but in ontario if you have a pal you can take the rpal course which you pay for and the upgrade licence is free till may 2008 and maybe to 2009 mine came in a month ago

I did'nt send in a penny for my upgrade from PAL to RPAL, (and if u're right that just makes me feel better.. hehe), but on a more serious the section says
"If you have previously held a firearms licence under the
Firearms Act, do not enclose a fee" and the PAL is a firearms license under the firearms act. The one you're lookin at is the last para in the first column on page 3, and that is only for "new" and not for upgrading. The guy testing me also told me that it wont cost me anything to upgrade... I took the test in BC

If that's true I'm pissed cuz I sent payment for another $80!
I know if you do both PAL and RPAL at once it's only $80, but the instructor I used told me that I would have to pay if I upgraded later... ah well too late for me now I guess.

I upgraded too and didn't send a penny.

Y'know what I just checked my credit card statement and as it turns out I wasn't charged for upgrading after all, even though I filled out the form to pay the $80.
So I guess it's true and if you already have your PAL you don't have to pay to upgrade.

I spoke to the firearms centre just a month ago right now you can upgrade from the Non to restricted for free, this is supposed to be ongoing for awhile (may was the original date given but the rep said it will be extended) and even if you had to pay it would only be $20 more! Give them a call to verify!! I did!

if you paid by credit card check your statement TDoyle--- maybe they only charged you the $60 and you just don't realize it. It might be worth a phone call if someone did charge you too much, eh?
