I've had my regular pal since i was able to get it. but now i want to go for my restricted. i've read the hand book and 'handled' sigs a few times at work (airforce). what i'm looking for is any tips or areas that i should pay particular attention to before i challange the exam.
the resticted courses up here are few and far between.
thanks

I just did the upgrade myself. They're going to want you to do the PROVE and ACTS for both SA and DA revolvers as well as the automatics. Don't forget the safeties :p.

And don't point it at the instructor! ;)

It's pretty easy, I did mine with no problems and I haven't held a handgun in almost 20 years.

If you get stuck during the practical (ie : Don't know the safety mechanism) just tell the instructor that you're unsure of the safety and he will help you. You can't be expected to know every tidbit about every pistol on the market, and they understand that.

probably be asked which two calibres can be used in one gun. They asked me that during the hands-on part of the test.

You can't point it at the instructor or anyone else, that's an instant fail. You are allowed to point it at your face when doing ACTS & PROVE, to check for barrel obstructions after making sure it's unloaded. When I took the course though, we were told to imagine we had a cleaning rod and were checking for obstructions with that as opposed to pointing it at your face. Also, don't pull the trigger, just say BANG if he asks you to fire, and keep those fingers out of the trigger guard.

My instructor (while back) said that for the course, the gun shoots what's written on the barrel or in the manual. If you're not sure, just what's on the barrel. Again, this is for the course...the point is to prove that if there's any doubt, you're err'ing on the side of safety...

There is the .38 in a .357, the .44sp in a .44 mag, the .45lc in the .454 casull, the .45lc and the .454 casull in the .460SW...and a bunch of interchangeable .22's for some...and probably a bunch more that I'm not familiar with :p

The instructor will also ask you to pick out various rounds with various types of bullets... 9mm luger, .38 special, .45 etc my only mistake was I couldn't pick out a .45 semi-wad cutter.

I know the whole frickin test off by heart now. When I'm giving the test I don't even have to read off the sheet.

Just take your time, and use common sense. If you're not sure, err on the side of safety.
