Hi Everyone,

I am hoping someone could clarify something for me. If I have a restricted rifle can I store it in the below case with a trigger lock in a closet or does it need to be in a safe?

2 locks one on gun one on cabinet /container ... If it says SAFE anD is a SAFE no locks on gun, mags can be stored inside loaded but not in the gun...

So locking my soon to be restricted rifle in a locked container with a trigger lock in my closet is enough?

Thanks Terry

To the letter of the law, yes.
A trigger lock on the rifle, and the rifle inside a locked gun case is ok.

"Attach a secure locking device so the firearms cannot be fired - Trigger lock

and lock them in a cabinet, container - That case is a lockable container

or room that is difficult to break into;or

Lock the firearms in a vault, safe or room that was built or modified specifically to store firearms safely."

Yep, restricted require a two lock system unless in a safe. One on the firearm (trigger lock usually) and one on the container. If it's in a proper safe OR a room built to house firearms you don't need the trigger lock.

Perfect thanks everyone! Now does anyone know where to get an amazing deal on one similar to the below?? Or recommend another one??

You know, Costco has great everyday prices on actual safes. I picked up the 12 gun safe in store for only $339.99, now it only actually holds 8 but I'm still very happy with the quality. One thing I've learned is that your always gonna want to buy more guns, It's like a sickness. So you might aswell have the extra storage. Cases like the one your looking at are really only good for ttransporting your firearm. It cant stopp a thief from walking right out the door with that thing, but a safe bolted to the wall in your closet will. Just my 2 cents

My solution was a large Pelican case model 1750 long. While not cheap, the Pelican cases are very solid and will last forever supported by an excellent warranty. I have two smaller Pelican cases I keep in my truck for transportation and as "range bags". The 1750 holds my AR with a scope, my shotgun and several pistols in pistol rugs. It has four locking latches of which I lock two with good quality combination locks. It took a while to work out how to orient all the gear but it works very well for me. In a pinch I can move all my firearms at one time. As I cross into the US and return home twice a year, one case holds everything the authorities may need to see.

Soft cases are fine, as long as they are opaque, lockable and hard to break into (which has never been defined).

This is correct, but for a storage 'solution', I don't think a soft case is your best answer. Spend the extra few bucks and get a hard case. Better, as mentioned elsewhere, look at the Costco safes. They come on sale for $330-350 and are an excellent value for the money. They're entry-level safes for sure but there's absolutely no doubt you're in compliance with the law. A bored prosecutor might decide your soft-sided case isn't "hard to break into" enough. That $350 won't even cover a lawyers retainer.

You're just coming into the hobby I know (or you'd realize how sweet the deal on the Plano case is). Budget for the safe first. It's cheap insurance.

I agree with this, I have two of them. They are an excellent value and unquestionably in compliance with the firearms act bullsh!t. If OP is playing with black rifles the $350 that the safe costs won't even be noticeable in a few months.

Once again, this crap rears it's ugly head - there is NO LEGAL DEFINITION of "safe", and NO WHERE in the FA is a definition provided and NO WHERE in the FA is there a requirement for the word "safe" to appear anywhere on the "safe" in question. According to the Ontario court that last tried this garbage, a metal gym locker with a chain around it is a "safe" suitable for the storage of 12.2 prohibited firearms.
