For transport of restricted handguns and ammunition to/from the range I have always kept both separate during transport:

• Handguns unloaded and trigger locked inside a hard shelled, locked pistol case
• Ammunition inside a separate hard shelled, locked ammo can
• Both carried inside a fabric sports bag with all the other range items in external pockets

What’s permissible? How do you transport?
 
Firearms trigger locked, in a locked case, in the trunk of my car......ammo and everything else locked in a range bag, also in the trunk....
 
I keep my ammo locked in my range bag and in the trunk. Firearms are unloaded, trigger locked, in a locked case in the trunk.

My unloaded pistols are in a soft shelled pistol case with a trigger lock, and the soft shelled case has a lock as well. The pistols and ammo are stored in a range bag with a lock. I also have the paperwork (reg certs and LTATT) in my range bag outer pockets, and additional copies in the glove compartment.

I personally feel the stated rules leave too much latitude for interpretation. As examples, 'It (ammunition) can be stored in the same locked container as the firearms; and 'Lock the firearms in a sturdy, non-transparent container'. What defines sturdy?

I also should have added to my original post that I take all the required paperwork. I bring 'everything' and keep paper copies inside my handgun case under the foam, inside my transport bags outside pocket and electronic copies stored on my iPhone.
 
I think there is some dangerous practices here.

1. for locking the pistol, a soft case in no way can be considered as "sturdy container". the common "safer" practice to avoid any hassle is a pelican like case, or at least the factory hard case(not the cardboard ones).
2. for ammo. there is NO law right now for this. HOWEVER, for a few high profile lawsuits filed by crown, unlocked the ammo, visible or not, were considered unsafe handling of explosives. so, again, to be safe, in either a LOCKED separate compartment of the range bag, or ideally a LOCKED separate ammo box.

Again, like others said, the law is very vague, but unless you are willing to fight this in the court, I think this is the common sense safer approach.

you are doing what everyone should do and in accordance with the laws +1 !

I do the same , trigger locked in a locked case + ammo in a military box (locked).

Also have a Samsonite case which I've put memory foam, good for two handguns, locked.

^This. There is nothing illegal or unsafe about having live ammo unlocked. My guns are trigger locked, in a locked case, locked in the trunk (secure and compliant). Ammo can be in a can (military) in a pelican case (unlocked) or in their cardboard boxes in the trunk...no problem.
Some guys at my range have told me to remove the magazines (which are empty) from the auto's and keep them in a separate container when transporting...meh, I don't think so.

*edit* this is for transport. In my home ammo is locked up tighter than a drum and in a completely different location/floor than firearms, which are also of course in their lock up.
 
Guns are locked up, ammo in my range bag. Hell some of the people in our club pretty much want you to transport NR guns and bolts in separate vehicles

Define common sense becouse if you ask me I would say common sense is that ammo dose not need to be looked up while transporting ammo and will continue to transport my pistols in my soft sided range bag since it satisfies the legal requirements.
 
Pistols trigger locked in a locked hard case possibly with loaded mags depending on the pistol. Ammo and mags loaded or unloaded go in my range bag or tool box. To each their own as long as the law is upheld IMO.
