I recently came into possession of three different sets of calipres. All were made in China.
All three measure differently at any given distance.
If I set them with a 1 inch standard after setting them with a 3 inch standard, they all need to have their zeros reset at each length. The reset is only afew thou but if you're turning out something on a lathe that requires close tolerances, the results can be underwhelming to say the least.
IMHO, I wouldn't rely on a cheap precision device, unless it was for a purpose that real precision isn't really necessary.
On the other hand, I have an old NSK manual, non dial indicator vernier that are now sneered at, that you can set guages by. It's extremely accurate but can be a bit of a bear to read with aging eyes.
Pay the extra dollar and go for Mitutoyos or Starrets, maybe even a few others. The crap that's sold at Princess Auto is just that, crap.
By the way, you just dropped your calipres, I threw mine onto a concrete floor, so that no one else would try to fish it out of the garbage and try to put it to use.
