Retina detaching rifles

I have yet to shoot it but a 35 Whelen recently acquired weighs in at 7.5 lbs. field ready.
I'll bet with a 250 gr. or heavier bullet it will have some snap.
My old Whelen probably a pound and a half heavier would get my attention with a 275 gr. handload.

A trusted friend and fellow forum member made up some hot pant-poopers for bear defence in his guide gun. Offered me a couple.

My pants got duly pooped. Stood me *right* up. I tried to act all casual, too. Strutted around and tried to come up with a reason I couldn't fire it a second time that didn't involve being a giant ######.

Man, up until then I thought I was hot shirt in a wineglass.

Ruger put the "C" contour barrel on these for some reason, they were too light. 7.8 lbs stock. I made a lead insert for the buttstock hole which added ~ 12 ounce IIRC. Only shootable from standing with full power loads.

i have a similar rifle , but in 45-120 sharps , 3 1/4 " case that i load with smokeless ... mine has a 28 inch heavy barrel and weighs at least 12 pounds .

if i shoot it from a bench i put a bag of shot between my shoulder and pad to reduce the bruising :D
 
I had a 460wby built on a ruger#1 years ago, really got your attention . As did a 6lb Remington in 375 ackley that the late Ron P put together

I have a push feed majectic featherweight with a williams peep sight, no break though. This is the monarch? They are peppy little buggers for sure.

Phil Shoemaker wrote an article many years ago about building a 505 Gibbs on a Brevex Mauser action to be used backing up brown bear clients in Alaska. He used a .510" Browning M2 barrel rather than a traditional .505" barrel which is normal for the Gibbs. He said that when he started testing the rifle he kept seeing excessive muzzle flash. He asked his spotter if he saw it as well and the spotter did not. Eventually they came to realize that the flashes were actually the beginning of detached retinas.

Testing was promptly suspended until a 25lb bag of shot could be located to put between the butt and the shoulder.
 
While not in the league of many of the heavy hitters on this thread, I have a fairly light 8mm Remington Magnum that will
get your attention when shooting the 220's at close to 3100 fps. It is amazingly accurate, though, and I am not planning
on getting rid of it anytime soon. D.

There can't be many #1s in 460wby kicking around. I wonder if the one I have is the same one?
 
it could be the same 460, started life as a 458 win then re chambered it to my favorite 45 caliber the 450 ackley, then off to the smith nit went a few years later to become the 460 wby.
eventually sold it to a friend and I believe it was magnaported then eventually had a muzzle brake installed. Back when I had it, it was a handful with no brake on it and tossing 500gr hornady's @ 2700fps
 
I had a 450 3 1/4 in a ruger#1 before they factory chambered them.
Ran 600GR round nose out of it with lots of powder.
Was lots of fun.
My 72 cal black powder side by side with 550gr round ball with 220gr of black powder behind them got your attention as well.

Lol. I still have that issue.
 
a older Sako in 30-378 ,120 grains of 50bmg, 180 NBT,some people my scoff at this load,a couple of these off the bench and that will be enough
had the rifle all sighted in then my friend wanted to try it with out the muzzle brake, twisted the leupold rings off of the bases lol

Hmmm. You've pretty much nailed it, except the brake. There isn't a break on this one. Small world. I picked it up from a fellow NW of Camrose, worked in Wetaskiwin at the time, about 8-10yrs ago, probably still have a registration cert for it in the files somewhere.
