Retriever Final Resting Place decoy

Wasn't sure where to put this so mods can move if inappropriate in lounge.

Had a friend lose his retriever a few months ago and as painful as we all know it can be he asked if I would make a hollow cedar and oil paint decoy for Rudy's (BLM) ashes so he could continue to join him on hunts for years to come.
Rudy will be out in the slough opening morning for many years to come and sit on the mantle between hunts.

Thats awesome. I loved my dog and still miss her. She was the best hunting partner ever. Never had a hangover and when it was time to go early in the morning, she was always ready.

Outstanding idea! I'm sure many a glass will be raised to him while drying off on the mantel, and while in the field he can laugh at the new dog from the comfort of his new home!
Wish I had thought of it 2x years ago when the owner of the camp I get invited to lost his lab of 10x years...he would have loved it.

This has been on my mind a lot lately.
An urn for our old gal.
I was going to use the Costco doggie cookie jar.
Dropped the darn lid and made a bunch of pieces.
Glued it back together, but my heart says........no.........find something else
that's not busted.

Question to the OP, could you describe the steps as to how you achieved such a
remarkable piece?

That is an incredible idea and an incredible decoy.

Did Rudy like mergansers? I hear some folks use them for doggie treats. Also heard some dogs dont like retreiving them...

I took our factory second, humane society special on her first hunt this past fall. It might not have gone exactly as planned but I loved every minute of it and she gets excited every time the Benelli makes its way out of the basement. Makes me fear the day we'll have to part ways, but I digress.

Absolutely incredible work, and my sincerest condolences to Rudy's family. They say the dog is man's best friend. How much of a better deal we got really can't be overstated.
 
That is a very neat idea... nice job on the decoy too. I would be inclined to leave it on the mantle, eventually water is going to get into the ashes and it will mold and have to be discarded. I have lost six good retrievers over the years... it is always hard to get over, but fortunately the best medicine is a new retriever puppy, and they are very easy to love...

When Lexie goes, she would most comfortably reside inside a woodie drake... she just loves hunting beaver runs and flooded timber for woodies.

No reason you couldn't place the ashes in a vacuum sealed package before placing in the decoy and then seal or even plastidip the decoy before final paint.
 
My Lab is 11 and in great shape but I know it's not very many years before the end. To have him join me on future hunts like that is the best idea that I have heard in a long time.
