This little Golden of mine who's 1.5 yrs now,was doing perfectly at retrieves..I threw them away ,he went and got them. Released them into my hand.the world was perfection. Then POOF almost overnight lost interest..Any ideas.Because he learns things real easy was he trying to tell me he was bored and ready for something different.ie feathers etc  The thing of it is,I'm not doing anything different than with every other dog I've owned

Something must have happened to turn him off.... did the dummy land in some poop or urine in the yard? Some dogs will reject a soiled dummy... try a new one!
Check his mouth ( bad tooth or gums ) and his feet for injuries... many times a pup will hurt himself during a retrieve and this will make him shy.
Keep at it with patience B/S.

I found out something very interesting this morning. I think its possible this dog has more grey matter than I credit him for..Cause although there was none of the above mentioned probs with the old dummy,I got another one,and away we went like gang busters again. Now hes loosing interest in it two...I once had a real daisy of a retriever that was a bit like that..He would retrieve anything short of a grand piano..But once he knew I had touched it repeatedly,it was like"OKAY I've retrieved it,you've touched it,NEXT" I know this is giving a fair credit as to the intillect, but I wonder...We know that one of the hardest things to teach is a good solid unbroken HEEL. I had this dog doing it flawlessly in about 6 attempts....He may just realize(get bored)that the same thing doesnt need retrieved a million times..What do you think?.Irregardless I was Damned happy to see him come marching back with something again. I no doubt my carry on woke the neighbours:D

Positive reinforcement. Assuming you give him regular dry pellet-type food, keep a small baggie of it in your pocket and give him one or two pellets EVERY time he does anything he's been told (come, sit, down, heel, fetch, stay, whatever.). Also, vary your commands, dogs will get bored if you ask them to do the same thing over and over again, even if he just knows 4 or 5 commands (like most dogs), keep the dog on it's toes by never issuing the same command twice in a row.

You can also try to get the dog a "special" collar, basically a collar that the dog only gets to wear at "work", pretty soon the dog will associate the collar with fun, praise, and most importantly EXTRA FOOD. If you decide to go with that approach though it's very important that you ALWAYS insist on your commands being followed through, much more so with the collar on than off, that establishes "dominance" between you and the dog, dogs are smart critters, soon the dog realises what's expected of him, knows he won't get away with not doing it, and besides, it's a lot more fun for him to get a food reward than a stern NO! and an annoyed boss...

I have a female golden 7 months old. she is crazy for grouse and doing good. she retrivered a few birds so far. I've only had hounds in the past and now I realize how stupid hounds are. this dog is very smart, she watches every crow in the sky and even though she has only been out 4 or 5 times, if I put a gun to my shoulder she comes over and looks to see what I'm gonna shoot!

Can anyone recommend a website for training info as I am trying to train her like a walker hound right now. (not really but i don't know what I'm doing)

Seems your dog graduated from what I call "basic intelligence" (command-response) to "final intelligence (knowing there is a purpose).

I'd guess he's ready for real birds more than dummies. Keep the game meaningfull and fun. Dead pigeons fetch (exite the dog before throwing by getting him to smell the bird)... get him really in it, order a sit-stay, throw and get him to fetch... Mach3 ground speed!!!!!

Get him to an area where you can plant live pigeons and flush them. Shoot (I assumed he's introduced to guns and isn't gun-shy)and get him to fetch (that being the closest to the real hunting action he's meant to encounter). Keep fetch sessions short, varied and fun.

If you don't know how to plant pigeons without a launcher, pm me.

Hope this works.
