Retro Scattergun Builds and Discussion Thread

Installing a +2 on that auto does not immediately make it illegal.

The +2 would have to be functional to be illegal...many owners permanently obstruct them and use them for aesthetics.

Actually on that particular gun, I think a plus 1 or 2 would ruin the look. It just looks plain nasty (in a good way) just as it is

A 12 gauge 870 Wingmaster top with 20" rifle sighted barrel and bottom a Remington 20 gauge Tactical that I swapped out the original synthetic stocks for Boyds camo laminate.

Wingmaster receiver I picked up off the EE and added the police wood and a 18" Remington barrel.

Good evening to you sir, I trust this finds you well tonight and thanks for the thread.

This is now a triple post for me so I'll apologize to those who've seen it on a BC forum I hang out on as well. Anyway here's the latest build I did up for our eldest daughter.

The project began to gel in my mind as early as last summer when our eldest daughter Amy-Liz moved to the Island and began to carry on the time honored family tradition of tenting in bear infested areas.

Initially I encouraged her to pick up some bear spray and a holster, but as we all know, spray is less than useless when one is INSIDE one's tent.

Thus it struck me that the simple solution was to build her something similar to what she's seen resting beside my sleeping bag most times when we tented in spots where it was legal to do so.

The foundation for the project was a screaming Boxing Day sale item I found while perusing the Prophet River site. I've dealt with Clayton a few times and find both him and his website super easy to deal with. In short order this arrived via the good folks at Canada Post.

The sharp eyed among us will appreciate the vintage duck loads I've found for the photo.

It's a base model Lakefield Mossberg 500AB with a 3" chamber. The actions, parts and stocks were made in Canada, but as far as I'm aware the barrels all came from the US.

This is a partial pile of parts and pieces assembled for the project - more on that as we trundle on.

The TruGlo bead and Decelerator come from the good folks at Western Gun Parts in Edmonton, who while not the cheapest always, invariably have good stock and better yet know what they've got.

The Hi-Viz, machined Delrin magazine follower comes from a Canadian outfit - S&J Hardware. I ordered a Day Glo Green and Blaze Orange one to see what they looked like. Amy[-Liz chose the Blaze Orange so mine now has the green - again more on that later.

It's a bit of a trick to take the magazine tube off of a Lakefield Mossberg - not the same as a Mossberg apparently as I found out..... Anyway if anyone is interested sometime I can outline the process which I first performed on mine and then after figuring it out did the project's in less time. Here's the Blaze Orange one installed.

To say they work slick is an understatement and my only regret with them is not ordering the kit which included a new stronger spring. So of course my OCD kicked in and there's now two new springs coming from Ontario as I type - oh and a kit too which I'm going to install into a co-worker's Lakefield Mossberg sometime too.

Next the barrel gets shortened to a tad below 19" - I do that so it's not ambiguous or anywhere close to 18.5" and even the most enthusiastic LEO will be okay with it...... long story there, not all of it good.

Then once we've arrived at dead center, a new hole is drilled, then tapped for the TruGlo bead.

These beads really show up in low light conditions and I'm a big fan. I should also note that they're epoxied in place - just because.

Now we tear the moving parts out and give them all a thorough scrubbing - first with something like Butch's and/or Brake Clean and then a good coating of something like Break Free CLP or G96 CLP. This one hadn't been given a good cleaning since the '80's I'd say.

The butt stock got a coating of G2 epoxy, then some sanding and finally a few coats of Tru-Oil for looks. It's been shortened to 13" pull, including the Decelerator. An Allen butt cuff is a little old school, but they work fine and are easy to replace, so on one went.

Lastly I installed a sling mount stud, but fairly far forward so if one wants to carry it either muzzle up or muzzle down it rides high.

Here's what the bear repellent rig looks like once all the parts are assembled.

Here's the last shot of Amy-Liz's along with mine - I'm fairly confident her's will give her at least as many years of good service as mine has - and I've had mine 42 years now.

Anyway that's the build for the most part.

If anyone has any questions as to how or why I went a certain way I'd be more than happy to try to answer.

Thanks for looking and all the best to you all this BC Family Day weekend.

Very nice looking pair. IMO you need to put a wooden butt on yours & ditch the Speedfeed.
I like the old-school "butt-cuff", easier to grab shells from compared to the clunky Speedfeed.

Yup, will have to order the right one next time :)

You did order the right one. Rem extensions always went about 1/2" in front of the barrel until just a couple of years ago. Scattergun Tech extensions would go flush to the end of that barrel. That's why they look too short now with the 1/2" longer barrels.

BC30cal: what an amazing little project - love how she turned out. Thanks for sharing the play-by-play with us. Seeing your project has given me a bit of an itch though ;)

Fellow GunNutz;
Thanks for the replies and thoughts on the Lakefield Mossberg project, I appreciate you folks taking the time.

As a bit of additional information for anyone doing a bit of a build like these, the springs arrived from S&J Hardware on Friday so I installed them today.

I'd ordered longer springs and the ones I got measured 48" relaxed. The stock springs in both measured very close to 16".

While I initially thought that I could use half of one or 24" for one shotgun, that proved to be a bit long actually.

I've installed the "short follower" from S&J in both shotguns and until the springs were shortened to 17", the magazine would not allow more than 4 rounds of "average" 2 3/4" shells. I say "average" because I tried Challenger Slugs, Score Slugs, Fiocchi Slugs, Federal Slugs, Sellier&Bellot Slugs as well as some older Winchester AA trap and even some ancient, high brass, blue hulled Imperial BB.

The Sellier&Bellot are a tad longer than the rest and were the only shells that did not allow 5 shells to be loaded with the spring shortened to 17".

Again I'll send out a tip of the hat to a couple grand Canadian stores - Prophet River for an easy to use website and screaming deal for the project and S&J Hardware for great service on a couple orders so far.

On the S&J Hardware followers, as it happened I installed a third one - this time their NJF Type 2 in a bow hunting friend's 870 today and just like the Lakefield Mossbergs the result was super slick feeding. Can't say enough about that particular mod from our initial test results.

Hopefully that was useful for someone out there tonight folks. Again, may none of us ever need our bear repellent for serious work.

I too have thoroughly enjoyed this thread. I've been promising myself to do this type of build for a while. Haven't found the right base for the right price...... yet!

Heres my 870 with a s&J +1 .
debating getting a ghost sight for the recevier or getting a gunsmith to change the blade sight into a bead.

Very nice! ↑↑↑ I recommend getting the ghost ring or Scatterbuild rear sight. Beads on short barrels are not very accurate in regards to POA vs POI.

I think that a nice big brass bead would finish that little shorty up perfectly. Awesome retro looking piece. Jealous.

Anyone have a wood stocked Witness Protection?
