Aside from a host of cap and water pistols my experience with air guns started with a Red Rider Daisey BB gun at about 8 yesrs old. 60 odd years later I return with a recent purchase of a Crossman Nitro Piston .177 rifle with a 4x32 scope. Things have changed over the past 60 years. Had I had this back in the day.....!

In any event I have no experience with this rifle, to be corrected in about three hours as I am off to the range to sight the scope in.

I have several cans (10) of Liberty .177 pellets given to me by my neighbour. They are supposed be be quality pellets. Their weight varies from 7.5 to 7.9 grains, Your experience, if any, with them would be appreciated. This is going to be a fun little rifle and should be just the ticket for some crows that inhabit the backyard at 4:30 in the %$%$# morning. That and the destruction of copious amounts of paper targets.

ps This is no kids rifle. We seniors must be going through a late life crisis. LOL

Welcome back to the airgun world.

Let us know what you think of your new toy. I have the pistol version of your rifle, and quite happy with it. I shoot Crosman Premier Hollow Point pellets and gives 1.25" groups at 10 meters.

I started with air rifles in the early 80's shortly before taking up powderburners. Have always had an air rifle since. Still have my 1988 mfr Diana 45 (Original) bought very slightly used in 1989. Others have come and gone. Now have a couple of HW97s one each in .22 and .177 as well as a CZ630.

Shooting these airguns give a different kind of satisfaction than powder guns. Something akin to saiboats and powerboats.

Easy I have to admit my neighbour brought over 12 x cans @500 pellets per for me to melt down. Being cheap er frugal, naw just cheap, I figured the pellets were worth more if I shot them sooooooo I explained to she who knows best after I ordered the gun how macro economics works in Bobby's World. Hey have bought pistols for a lot less coherent reasoning than above. LOL Anyway onmy way back to the range. The rifle is a shooter at 10 yards so far.

ps There is a pistol version?????eeeeggggggggghhhhhhhh Sound of wallet opening.

Well I got my rifle sighted in yesterday. At 15 yards I have it shooting into a dime sized hole off the bench so I figure that is about as good as I can keep everything aligned. Off to visit a friend who has a bit of an acreage north of here this afternoon. We might knock a hole in the crow population or rivet a few pop cans. I am using the Liberty pellets and they seem to work ok. I may test "she who knows best" patience and see about setting up a range in the garage....or not. Might not be a good plan on Mother's Day.

For those in the know, what is the trajectory of these pellet plinkers beyond 15 yards?

If you're looking for a pistol, the Beeman P17 is a good deal. $60ish I think. Good trigger, accurate gun. It's a copy of the HW40.

Woody thanks I will look them up.

Easy - Accuracy went south this afternoon. I was all over the place. The gun started out six inches low then high and well I foolishly started adjusting the scope and then..... In any event I got it down to 3" groups at 15 yards and came home before I hung myself. LOL.

I will back at it tomorrow after I see about getting some 40 cal weighed at the post office. to add to the frustration I am also trying to get more time on my Optic sighted PPQ. Speed is slowly coming back.

For springer (including the nitro piston) air guns, there is a way to hold it for best accuracy called "the artillery hold". Google fu that!

Sounds to me like your scope didn't like being on an air gun, they have more kick than a 22 and it can knock the scopes about quite a bit. I've seen them (the rings) slide right back of the mounts when on dove tail rails. Air gun rated scopes made for springers are out there, just find one you like and quality mounts. Often times that costs more than the air gun lol :D

Well the earth tilted a bit my way today. I went to CT and bought some Crossman spire and hollow point pellets and quickly found out my gun prefers them to the Liberty brand round nose I have been using. Once dialed in the gun was shooting 3/4" groups off my sled. I went back to the Liberty brand a few times and the gun went from 3/4" to 3" instantly.

I have a friend who has a couple of youngsters just starting out with their air guns. The Liberty's will go to a new home. 10 x 500 ought to keep them busy for awhile.

Now to start practicing sitting and standing. Should be fun. I have a couple of crows who frequent my backyard feeder that need culling. She who knows best leaves for a visit with my sons back in Alberta at the end of the month for a week. mooohaha let the fun begin. :>)
