Reusing Brass

Hello everyone,

I know this is a pretty noob question, but how many reloads can you get out of your brass before you need to toss it, and get new brass?

Depending on the cartridge,I use rifle cartridge brass from about six times,to about a dozen times.

You can only reload new brass once, and then you must toss it away. Preferably in my direction!!

Seriously, you can reload it up to 20 times if you are doing it right and everything is working for you. This is kind of a vague question and could be answered more readily if we knew what you were shooting since straight-wall cases last longer than bottleneck cases, and rimless cases normally last longer than rimmed. Neck-sized cases last longer than FL sized cases...etc...

Depending on how hot you load, expect at least 6 reloads with them.

Keep them until there are signs of rim damage or a case fracture.

You have to check your brass each time you load it for signs that it is or is not ok.

Pistol cases like 9mm,.45 ACP,.38 etc last a lot longer than bottleneck rifle cases like .308, 223, .303 typically do.

Some brass might be done after one or two uses, some might be good for 50 it all depends. Your manual will explain this more in depth.

from what ive been told pistol brass lasts for a long time and i still haven't had alot thrown out just be careful and inspect your cases well if you see anything that gives you doubts toss it

Keep loading until it's garbage. You'll know...the brass will crack (usually nickel) primer pockets will expand so that primers won't stay in, heads will no longer fit nicely in shell holders etc.... Generally in those pistol calibers you can reload brass a whole lot of times.

For 40 and 9mm, don't bother reload more than twice because range once fired all over the place. 45 on the other hand can reload several times because it is a low pressure round, the brass life can hold up longer than 9mm and .40.
