Reusing components?

I reload my own 45ACP. I have quite a few rounds that are unfireable. (Primers not seated, brass deformed when loading, etc). I've just been throwing them in a box. I have accumulated quite a few.

Here is my question. I'm on a tight budget and hate to waste anything. If I separate the components with a bullet puller is it safe to reuse the projectiles?

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.
 
Hi. The bullets, for sure. The brass will depend on how badly they got deformed. The powder too, if you know what powder it is.
"...Primers not seated..." Not in far enough? You can push 'em in more if the pocket isn't damaged or under size. Failing that, you can pop 'em out with the decapping die. Slowly and gently run 'em through the decapping die and they'll pop out with no fuss.
 
A couple of years ago at the Ontario IPSC Provincials at Sharon I was pulling bullets for the chronograph and pulled a cast bullet with rifling marks already engraved. That is reusing components.
 
I knew an old fellow who ran a trap and skeet field that used to re-use 12 gauge plastic wads, he'd run them through the washing machine, let them dry then use them to load again.

Dominion at that time also sold primer caps that fit inside the shotshell primer cup, instead of replacing the whole primer, and a lot cheaper.
 
Yes, it's all reuseable, depending on the damage you did on the first pass through.
Yes, it's a good idea to wear eye protection when you are reloading.
 
I'm with splatter, I reuse everything, primers, powder, bullets. I even squash plated bullets in my 50 ton press to expose the lead to be melted out. Thrifty my wife calls me.
 
LOL... as long as you don't reuse unburned powder swept off the floor after range practice... LOL... kidding. Well, I have seen people seriously considering doing so thou..

If a component is not damaged - you can reuse it. Primers are an exception thou, at least in my book and at this time. If and when there is no new primers to get anywhere, one may consider reusing or even making their own primers - there are tutorials on the net.


I remember the times we kids had put primers on railroad tracks and waited for the train to run over them... and a few pennies too .. LOL
So, undamaged brass, bullets and powder from dis-assembled round - all can be re-used.
If using plated bullets - make sure the jacket is NOT cut or damaged when you pull the bullet and consider re-using it.
 
I don't reuse the primers. Never have. I do save the powder, as I've always loaded with the same powder. Haven't used it yet though. The brass I always reuse if it's not deformed, as it's 45 brass and lasts quite a long time.

I was never sure about the projectiles though. Those are what I have the hardest time sourcing, so I'm glad to hear that they can be re-used.
 
I'm a cheap ba$tard! I'll reuse every salvagable component I've got. I'll scrounge lead from the backstops and melt, cast again. I'll take split .38spl cases and cut them down for my .38S&W. I cut down .30-06 cases and made 8mm Mauser cases. Even tried a couple .308Win cut down for .44AutoMag. Only primer I've ever had blow was one I accidently hit with the kinetic bullet puller. (My wife thought I had shot myself)
Pays to look for that dropped primer!
