Reversable Mags for M14

I was thinkin, which is generally not a good thing... Anyway with our Canadian magazine restriction laws - and even in the USA these days, they should start making magazines that are the same at both ends if you know what I mean....

Take your typical 20 round M14 magazine and put the feed end at both ends. That way each side would only hold 5 rounds but you could just reverse the magazine and have 5 more. Technically it would be a 10 round magazine.

It might be something of a grey area though ~ law wise.

Anyway, just a thought... I'd buy something like that if it was available... and legal.

I suppose two 5 round mags could just be welded or screwed together at the floor plate

A 10 round AIA mag in a Norinco is evil. No 10 rounders allowed in semi-autos.

It certainly does... The flower at the other end.

I suppose I could just take 2 five round magazines apart and screw the floor plates together with a washer or two in between and re-assemble. That would do it, I suppose.
 
I like the AI mag thing, that's cool. Having them in your house would be cool, legal I mean, but do you think a game warden would run you up the flagpole if found in the field with one in an M305?
 
Lots of people have tried different ways of joining mags back-to-back. From what I have read, this works for upright stand-at-the-range shooting but is a disaster for anything defensive or tactical or hunting.

Not hard to see why.

If you made a 2X5 mag you would still have to remove the empty mag, invert it and re-insert the other end. Might as well have spare mags on your belt, for all the time you would save.
 
You could come up with a coupler to link two five-rounders the way they did with 10-round LAR mags in .223/5.56.
AIA mags work well in an M-14. The problem is getting new ones. This is explored in another thread.
 
The mag coupler to join two AIA or shorty M14 mags (or 5/20's) is being done right now. I'm sure the guy doing it will get someone to post about it soon enough.
It is the same idea as a AR15 mag coupler and I'm amazed it hasn't been done sooner.

Editted to add.... Personally I think it's a dumb idea. In my own been there done that tinkering, I found that recoil generally ruined the whole mag coupler idea as the rounds in the upside down mag tend to fall out or otherwise come unseated from their position in the mag.
Try it, you'll see :D
There's a saying that I remind myself of when shopping for accessories , "some lures catch fish.... But most just catch fishermen" , if ya get ma drift ;)
Kinda like m14 recoil buffers LOL

Incorrect. That mag is limited by the rifle it was designed for, not for any semi auto rifle. Example, the AIA 10 round mags was made for a bolt action. It happens to fit in the Nork M1A so there for that makes it a legal 10 round mag. It's the same loop hole that allows 10 round LAR -15 pistol mags to legally but used in an AR-15...

5 round mag. coupler? Ok. I'll take one or two. :) Maybe you can make a floor plate with integrated aluminum mag. pull/mag. extension for the M305 five round magazines. The only reason would be to reduce the weight of the rifle slightly and allow for easier removal. Anything that reduces weight, I like. Hunters might like it too. So what is the difference in weight between the 20 round magazine and the 5 round magazine? A good 4.5oz. or just over 1/4lb. I could see the extension weighing under an ounce therefore saving 3oz. of carry weight. 5/20 weight here. 5/5 weight here.
 
But.... How do you stop the upside down mag from jigglin the rounds out?
I've messed with this coupler idea many times
While it works well in low recoil rifles.... The m14's heavy 2 stroke recoil, rocks the mag too much and that messes up the rounds in the upside down mag.
I'd be surprised, pleasantly, if someone figures out a way to prevent the above issue

The idea of a simple extension for a 5rounder for hunting applications... Good one

I suggested to the guy who makes these to have one mag one way and reverse the other one but in the end it never panned out...
Or did it.
I would probably watch the CGN dealer forum over the next week for such a gadget to be released.
