Review: Sig 556R - Not what I expected

Thanks for another cool review. BTW did you ever solve the issue with your Tantal? The guys back home are telling me that they have never seen a Tantal or Beryl rifle keyhole...
 
Wow, quite a disappointing showing for the Sig556R... what a shame.

I look forward to the review of the XCR; I assume it will be posted here?

I didn't resolve the issue, I got rid of the rifle.

The barrel on the Century rifle is made in the US and it's the source of the problem. A real Beryl or even a proper Tantal barrel won't exhibit the problem. Century Arms has a reputation for poor quality and customer service so I wouldn't attribute their lack of quality to the Tantal itself. The Polish Tantal is a great rifle and I wish I had a good copy.

I'm looking forward to it myself. I ordered mine in FDE, it looked great in the pictures.

Great review....there is nothing wrong with a negative outcome.
I have one of the 7.62X39 XCR's and have been quite pleased with it in terms of fit and finish and function, using surplus Czech ammunition.
What I didn't like was the Canadian mandated greater than 18.5" barrel, and am currently in the process of having a shorter (~10.5") barrel made up, and will post a review when available.
Looking forward to the MA review...Keep up the good work!
 
The fact we can't get quality made Swiss rifles here in the States is a major downer. The 550 is something I've always wanted. It's such a great rifle, it's too bad Sig USA had to butcher it.

Two different flavors of Wolf. Here in the States it's probably the most common manufacturer of 7.62x39. It's cheap and readily available. I used some old lacquer coated Wolf and modern polymer coated Wolf. Both were standard ball.

I have many rifles in this caliber and none of them experience soft primer strikes with the same ammo. I've read elsewhere (http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=579057) that others are having soft primer strikes with Wolf and other brands of ammo.

There were at least 2 malfs there that I haven't seen before, and that, quite frankly, would require all new IA drills to clear. Why in hell does the bolt carrier retract back so far? You had more than 3/4 of a live round back in there, makes no sense at all. I get the feeling that whoever got stuck engineering this conversion was given a long list of things that they had to use with no modifications from other versions, so they did what they could, rather than doing the right thing. Absolutely amazing - Sigarms is in trouble. Swissarms would never release a rifle like that. I'm tempted to ask if the barrel mikes out at .308 - then you know they were using 'borrowed' components.
