I have the 16FCSS in .308 Win - the short action version of the rifle you are looking at. It is really accurate and the clip magazine functions flawlessly. It is an excellent rifle and for the price you really can't go wrong. The only thing that isn't the greatest on the Savage line of rifles is the stocks. They aren't the best out there but they do work.

Savage

Take a look at how long the Savage "long actions" are before you buy, may need some extension rings for the right eye releif in a 30-06. I am really looking at this rifle hard too but the super long action at a real turn off for me. Might need to look into the 16FCSS in .308 built on a short action. Let us know if you decide to buy, I would love to see some pics!!!

Any chance you could post a few pics of your .308 and the action, I wanna see how long the action is for mounting a normal 3-9 power scope. I know with the long action you usually have to use ring extensions. Can I see some pics of your short action. Thanks

I don't think you have a choice for scope mounting. The receiver is of a length that requires the base to be a bit offset so that the scope is mounted properly. Otherwise you need a really long scope. I don't know if it is the same with the long action but on the short action you can see the leupold base is slightly over the ejection port. It really doesn't affect anything as I have never had a round jam before.

Thanks, I wish I knew the difference in length between the short and long action. Looks like your short action Savage has a pretty long opening aswell. A regular 3-9 power scope usually has a 6" tube, I wonder where that would fit on the long and short action Savage. These are really nice rifles and Savage has put alot of effort into their marketing and rifles lately, however I hate the fact that these actions are soo long. This is almost a deal breaker for me.
