Hey guys.

I had a BPS waterfowl a few years ago (3” chamber, 28” barrel, and finished in MODB). I was quite fond of it, but sold it to a buddy, to get funds for a Benelli M2, figuring id like to try a semi. I’ve shot the M2 for a couple seasons now, but still have never shot it as well as I did my BPS, so am thinking of selling it and getting another Browning Pump.

My issue is, I’ve e handled the “new and improved” ones at my local Cabelas and was not overly impressed by the feel of the new stocks, or the overall fit and finish of the gun. They just seem built cheaper than they used to be.

Do any of you have experience with the new version? Should I pick one up, or just buy a used older one?

The only bps i have now is a jap 10ga stalker in black synthetic. Its an older one but yes i agree the older ones were better. Browning also had issues with their camo coatings peeling off. Id look for an older model myself

How would you sermonize they are built cheaper . Poorer quality steel or wood maybe the bluing is inferior
Nothing has changed same mechanics since they came out in 1978 only change browning did away with the cartridge mag cut off lever .

Just the way they feel. Sure it’s the same action, but it’s like comparing a Remington 870 Express to a Wingmaster. Technically the same shotgun, but anyone who holds the two in their hands will notice a difference.

I got a very clean used BPS few years back, very solid build. Being Browning, I expect the same level of quality with newer Brownings. Best feature is the bottom feed and eject as I shoot Rifles and Shotguns R/L. The only not so good point is the weight. With a steel receiver, might not be a good choice when you have to carry for hours during hunt.

I can't speak to the older ones but I do have one of the newer models. Synthetic stock (black) and set up with a 22" upland barrel (also have a 28" I can swap in). Quality feels very good to me. Part of the appeal for the BPS for me was the ambidextrous design.

I can't say whether the older ones had better quality but I've been happy with mine so far.

I think they've changed the finish of them. My friends Browning BPS is straight up blued and polished really nice. The ones I'm seeing in their catalogue are like a horrible looking Matt black. I'd much prefer a blued and polished model like my friends then this new look. I've got one in camo with duratouch and I'm lucky it's holding up, but I all ways wanted one in with wood and a polished blueing, I wouldn't even bother thinking about buying one if it's a matt black finish. It looks like they have really cut back on different offerings for the BPS. There's only four models, and all of the non camo kinds seem to have been cheapened out on finish wise.

Edit: I recommend going to Brownings website, where they have the option to find each make and model they've ever done for their different brands. So you can go back and find a specific model number for a BPS that you do like, and then search for it, so you know your not getting one of the new this or last year models that look like crap.

Did you get it bundled with 2 barrels? I am still looking for a shorter non-rifled barrel, 20” - 24”.

I bought it lightly used with both barrels. I don't believe they were bundled originally.

There is an upland model of the BPS with the 22" barrel but it has different stock geometry. Mine would have originally come with the 28" and had the 22" purchased on the side.

I shoot 2 BPS, one 12ga Field 28" which is my principal Trap gun and I recently bought a old model NIB 20ga Field 26" barrel for shooting skeet in that gauge. I had to do some digging to find the 20ga, the stock dimensions and trigger guard are the differences on the new model and wasn't taking a chance that it wouldn't fit me.

The newer guns are finished as matte black. Other changes I'm not aware of. The previous model was a "hunter" grade that was blued.
You can get BPS's in 10g to 410 with choke tubes. Discontinued now, they made Upland Special (straight stock) 22" barrel models in 12-20g models.
Other than 12g and the odd 20g, I don't see many of the other models offered for sale on the used market here.
