I have a Springfield .45 my dad left me when he passed away. It is a beautiful gun, iron sights with a comp; and I was thinking I would like to start using it, and standard division would be the best place for it. I was wondering if anyone has ever taken the comp and cut it back leaving only a small portion of it with the sight left on it. This would be the easiest way to go, as long as it fits the box, only adding slightly to the OAL. Where we only have a 10 round limit in Canada, a single stack can be competitive here. Anyone that has done something similar, I would really like to hear about it, and would love to see pics. The end result would be like a "sight tracker" so to speak. Thanks in advance! I don't have a gunsmith nearby that would want to cut, recrown, dovetail the slide and add a sight, and many gunsmiths only prefer to do bigger jobs, and I don't blame them as smaller jobs aren't always profitable for them.

While a great shooter can be competitive with a single stack, 95% of us can't. If you just want to shoot to have fun with it in standard division then have fun. Keep in mind no part of the comp can remain or you are in open division.

im curious, why does double vs single stack make such a difference? other than a much bigger hole to slam your mag into im at a loss

If both use 10 round mags, there should be very little difference between a single stack and a wide body 1911 style gun.

"J" I know the 45 you are talking about it was the 45 I was schooled on a few times.

"IMO" leave the top end as is, it is prefect just the way your dad left it. (Iron sight comp, open). pick up a slide and barrel to put it back to std. Give Gunner a call he can sort ya out on the part issue. Or if the $$ is to high I sure we can find some donnor parts here cheap enough.

Cheers

the difference between a single stack gun and a double stack gun is technology. i started out with an open, scoped 45, changed it to a 38 super when i squibbed a barrel out of it, upgraded to a Caspian then an STI. Each gun had better technology in it and improved my shooting. in the hands of a GM the average person wouldn't know the difference but if a competition between two equally ability GM's the new technology would give the edge.

Not to throw names out,..but I think at the 2007 USPSA L10,...Rob Leatham used a SS .45,...

That's it plus add in tapered magazines as opposed to blunt ones. It makes a huge difference. I can take an STI Edge (or Eagle since you're IDPA), turn it upside down, then take a magazine and angle it as much as 30 degrees from it's proper approach angle and drop it in. It will right itself and insert every time. Try that with a single stack...

Well, what I am getting at is this is something I have, and will never sell, and would like to use it for something. I got an email back from RK at DARK, I think he'll be doing the job for me. I know I'll never be a National champion, I am just looking at having some fun with it on a local level. I'm stuck in the past with old school stuff anyway, heck I still shoot a P9 in Open division..hehe

Yeah, but we are comparing apples to oranges. Robbie is not even human, he is a machine. :shotgun:

Honestly, you would be FAR better off to use the gun as it is in Open Division(or modified division in which it was intended). RK will do very good work on the gun to convert it back to Standard specs, but I don't see the reason why.

You said you did not want to be serious competitively with this pistol, so why not shoot Open? Sure, your scores will be a little lower (not always) than Standard division, but you won't be anywhere near the top anyways. Just shoot for fun for a while, and then think about changing the gun, or buying a different one. It's not the toy, it is the nut behind the wheel that makes the difference.:runaway:

Yeah,..but we have seen you shoot that P9,..and make it sing!

I think that is it for outdoor matches this season,..although there might be a match in Fredericton this sunday?

I know there is a match this sunday at AMA indoors.
I am going shooting standard for a few months before I get back into production. :slap: Lots of fun.

Maurice, I am applyong for my NS ATT, maybe we can meet up and pool down there over the winter. Haven't shot a match in quite a while, been real busy lately getting ready to move, etc... Think I'm going ahead with the single stack project, shot it a little last weekend, the thing is a tack driver. See You!

I shoot an old 45. It is 100% reliable. With some mods its a great shooter. Nice trigger, decent sights.

Despite running a single stack for a few years I believe that the double stack is a huge advantage. When I look at my scores on stages that do not require mag changes I score much higher, and those that require mag changes I score much lower. The single stack requires a more perfect alignment of mag to magwell to execute. If you are shooting for fun then this does not really matter. If you want to win or atleast be competitive than it helps to have a pistol that is roughly on par with everyone else in your division.

That being said I love my old 45.

Just emailed CFO today for the next 3 IPSC NS matches,...Carpooling sounds good. THere is an outdoor match this sunday at Springfield. Not sure which match I am going to attend, as there is also an indoor match at AMA on sunday.

This pistol is a Springfield NM built by Don Irvine. Anyone who had work done by him knows it's first class. Slide to frame fit is perfect, Nowlin barrell, Dlask trigger with Ed brown safties, beavertail, and I believe all internals are EGW. Lo-mounted Bo-Mar rear. Frame is checkered front and back with a S&A magwell. I am currently sketching out a design for a magwell that will attach to a stock mainspring housing. I will make it as big as possible as long as it fits the box. Can't wait to start on it, just a few rifle projects to finish, a Tanfoglio, 2 CZ's.... oh my where will I find the time hehehe....

Thanks! Just spotted this thread, and thats the first time someones actually explained an actual advantage of a double stack in a 1911 rather than just ranted on about "technology". I never understood the rational behind having a double stack in Canada before. I'm love my Colt SCG but if I'd understood this I might have invested in an STI Edge first.

I have done what you want to do and the work was done by RK Custom. What we did differently than what you plan was to remove the comp but leave behind the cone for the comp. This locks into the end of the slide the same as if the comp was still there and resulted in a standard gun that is as accurate or more than any race gun. Roger will then install a front sight to the slide by threading it in ..mine has NEVER moved since I got it done 10 yrs ago and about 12,000 rds.
The only problem I have had is a crack in the dust sheild of the frame just ahead of the trigger gaurd because we never filled in the holes in the frame from the optics we took off it. But that was after 8yrs of heavy use. a few minutes with a welder and the crack was gone. (am a welder by trade so did the work myself)
And I still shoot 8 rd mags and usually finish in the top 40% of the match.
Have problems counting past 8  see what happens when ya get old and broken down

A-zone, sadly thats the only thing this gun doesnt have is a cone, just a bushing barrell. This is a gun that I would love to start using, and say for the price of having a new standard gun, I might as well take advantage of one I already own and set it up to shoot it. I really like the look of the "Techwell" and if I guy one, that will be it. Should help a little with magchanges. Nice to hear good feedback for RK, I am told he does very good work.
