I went to a handgun range to try some out with an interest to buy.
I have lots of rifle experence and like my tikka's and sako.
I have shot a few handguns before. I had a few opinions before arriving.

1) I really liked my buddies 586 with the houge grip just right for my hand.
2) Am thinking of a vaquero, heard lots of good things well made and accurate etc.

At the club I tried a brand new vaquero for the 1st time. Felt great and fun to shoot. I was getting 5 " groups. Was not concerned thinking tequnique etc. Besides It was lots of fun.

They gave me a ruger gp100 to try, same win. white boz ammo in .38
I thought ho humdid not like the grip etc.
The shot a few 1 " groups???

What gives?
Any opinions welcome.

I second the better sights idea on the GP100, I used to own one and it was an accurate gun in itself.....also a friend of mine has a Vaquero in 45 colt and it is about the smoothest nicest shooting round I have ever shot I think, however I can't hit #### with it because of the grip style, I can't seem to get comfortable, but my friend can get very nice groups with it.

So I chalk it up to the grip style that doesn't fit my hand very well....along with me being a terrible shot anyway :)

Depending on how far you are shooting, I would say you have a good technique as well if you are getting groups like that.....I wouldn't complain about either gun if I could do that.

what is the best way to test a new gun for accuracy?

I am waiting to get the vaquaro.
When I do I want to really test its accuracy potential.

Short of buying a clamp style rest what have you guys done to test a new gun for accuracy?

What groups should I expect with a stock trigger and factory ammo?

Gp100 is one of the best double action 357mag revolver, the sight is decent and you can replace the stock sight with glo sight no problem. I like the GP grip over my S&W 686 Hogue. If you can find a nice used 586 then go for it, If not get a GP 100 and you will enjoy it for a life time.
