I was looking for an 8 shot revolver with a 6+ inch barrel, and I seriously contemplated the cheaper Rossi and the Taurus. Until I took my 44 mag Rossi ranch hand to the range and had a case fracture. We couldn't figure out why a factory sellier& belliot would rapture but it split right down the case. The unit had trouble loading and was kinda stiff to operate, but we shot a box through it thinking the case was a defect.

I got home to try to sort out the loading issue, I spent 3 hours deburring the entire action. there was such a big burr on the loading port and the gate that when I tried to load it there are gouges in the case, one case i tried to put in had an 1 inch scratch down the side, no wonder the case at the range split. This Rossi says made by Taurus in Brazil, and seeing how crappy the inside was I will never EVER buy another Rossi or Taurus product.

That is all

Ummm...warranty?

Im not the original owner, who probably panicked and sold it to me just to get rid of it after it malfunctioned for him. Warranty may have fixed one or both current issues, but this was downright dangerous out of the box. The one gouge in the case went more than half way thorough the case, just super sharp edges and burrs everywhere

Lower priced firearms usually need to be taken apart and filed/stoned down on all the edges.

A mare's leg made by Rossi/Taurus is half the price of a Henry or a Chiappa. You need to do a little bit of work to make it nice and smooth.

A Taurus 608 is also half the price of a S&W 627. So expect to do some finishing and fine tuning when you get it.

There's no free lunch in this world.

most often you get what you pay for.

cannot fault this logic.

Once you hold a Ranch Hand next to, for example, a Chiappa Mare's Leg (which costs about twice as much) the rough fit and finish of the Ranch Hand becomes quite apparent.

I have a 20" Rossi '92, and its been in the shop because of feeding problems, and as a consequence cost me money, more times than I care to remember. I should have spent the money on a better rifle, rather than repairs and upgrades. Now I know

As for the 8-shot revolver, if you haven't already, you will sooner or later come across the S&W "Performance Center" 627, in 38/357. They get the additional 2 rounds in a cylinder usually made for 6 x.45 cal, so it's a large ("N") frame revolver, and its beautifully made and shoots the way it looks. You will pay more, but feel better :D

.

I am interested in finding out if the "de-horning" process fixes the problem and how the gun works after the work is done. I have had a couple of cases split near the top in .45 Colt but it is a mild round compared to .44 Mag. so I didn't worry about it much.

Taurus revolvers aren't that bad are they?

A little bit rough around the edges maybe. But I think they generally function just fine.

It seems to work out that if you get a good Taurus that they are fine. And odds are that you'll get a decent one. But Taurus, more than many other makers, seems to suffer from issues even in new guns. Issues of dealing with these in the US through Taurus USA are legendary in a bad way. Up here with Freedom Ventures now the Canadian rep things are hopefully much better. The previous Canadian Taurus distributor was even worse than the stories that came from down south.

A recent purchaser out this way bought a model 94. After a brief inspection it was returned for refund unfired. So obviously it was one of the bad ones. He ended up paying more for a S&W 617 and despite the higher cost he was greatly pleased overall.

Made a deal for an s&w 8 3/8" 586

Still need something shiney, just got rid of two stainless rugers.

I would like an 8 shot 357 with a 6" or longer barrel, double action. The Taurus was what I was looking For size and spec wise, I don't know if I want to chance it

I think you should also check out he 627 Performance Center by S&W....8 shot cylinder, satin stainless and a tack driver but 5" barrel---shot my brother's and wow!!!. The TRR8 and R8 are nice revolvers but they are finished in matte black and feature Scandium frames. What I really didn't like about them is the barrels are sleeved. I am sure there's nothing wrong with sleeved barrels, just my preference.....YMMV.

I understand that Taurus has improved in the last decade, of course 20 years ago they were utter crap and had no where to go but up.

Rossi has always been crap. Had a .38 Rossi with timing issues, two trips to a gunsmith who couldn't do anything with it as no S&W parts could be made to fit. The one and only gun I've turned in for destruction. It probably managed to f@ck up the smelter.
