I've actually had pretty good luck finding commercially reloaded .38 lately by either Wolf or Centaure. It's not always available but seems to come into stock at some sponsors (Tradex, SFRC, Ammosupply.ca) on a fairly regular basis.

The trick is to buy a case or so whenever you see it so you always have a few thousand on hand.:d
 
My first modern revolver was a Ruger single six, .22LR or .22Mag. Great gun, I still use it to introduce new people to the sport. I did change out the stock black plastic grips it came with for a nice set of Hogue walnut ones, it looks so much better, now.
 
If you are buying new then I would go with the GP-100 over the 686. Personally I think it is a better gun BUT be prepared to tinker with it to get it right for you. I had a 6 Shot K22 and found it boring after awhile. I did get a Ruger SP-01 8 shot which is a great little plinker and fun to shoot. Ruger is coming out with a 5" GP-100 in .22lr which is on my must have list. 22ammo is as expensive to shoot as 38 spl if you reload and IF you can find it.

The Alpha Project guns look like they are good value. One of our guys bought the 9MM version and cleaned it up and he likes it. I would think the 38/357 version would be a good starter. They are not much cheaper though than a lightly used GP-100 if you are patient and wait. On that note I would go with the 4.2" barreled revolvers now available. I think they balance better than the 6" guns and are just as accurate in most hands.

ps The Uberti/Pietta SAA revolvers in .357 are certainly worth a look. Fun to shoot and reasonably priced.
 
I would definitely go with the .357, you can shoot .38 special or the magnums so it gives you flexibility. If you reload, even more flexibility to tailor your loads. I have both SA and DA, and enjoy them both. In DA I have both Ruger (GP100), and Smith (627PC), and enjoy them both, very good guns. I always take my Smith with me when I go to the range if that says anything.
