It's a Thompson SMG, sans shoulder stock and magazine. There. That's that.
And congrats to the OP on a great revolver. Most Smiths from that era have a near-perfect trigger pull both DA/SA. The 28 was meant as a working version of the 27, which was marketed as more of a finely finished target revolver. The 28, therefore, has a matte finish, standard trigger and hammer spur. I suspect the same amount of work went into the mechanics as the 27, but with standard parts as opposed to target. All Smith triggers break like glass.
