Revolvers, what should I look at trying/buying?

I have a GP100 4.2, it'a a total riot and the single action is very nice. Not too fond of the front sight (black blade) and the double action is not Smith nice, it's pretty heavy and gritty out of the box. Took a few hundred rounds to smooth out, and it's still heavy but OH SO FUN. Feels BEAST when you hold it, too.

Hi, I met you a couple of weeks ago at Phoenix (I was shooting my 27-2 beside you) I have a Ruger GP100 4.2 barrel that I enjoyed shooting then someone told me I should look at getting new springs in it, now it is like a new gun a FANTASTIC shooter, strong and reliable with a light smooth trigger (the stock Ruger ones always take a while to break in)

Right! It was nice meeting you. I'm actually keeping a box of 38spl in my bag now in case I run into you again.

Good responses, thanks for the info. So it sounds like S&W and Ruger are where I should be looking to spend my money. I really liked the triggers on the Smith I shot this weekend. I'll start saving up nickels and see what I can find. My target caliber is 38spl as it's easy to shoot and seems fairly cheap to reload too.

Has anybody got any feedback on the Alfa Project revolvers? I noticed they have a 9mm and as I already reload 9mm, it would be nice to have something in that caliber without buying spending AR-type money on Jerry Miculek's 929.

Do a search going back a year or so on the Alfa's. There are a couple of forum members with 9mm Alfa's and they have posted quite a bit of info on them.

I love my 4.2 inch 686... Can shoot BOTH .38 and .357, and I find it's perfectly balanced.

Compared to my friends 629 you can shoot either calibre all day long, especially .38. I find .44 is a bit heavy for more than a couple of serials...

Well, I've got a bit of a thing about revolvers too, as a peek in my safe would show. Lots of good recommendations here, but I'd suggest shooting a few and see what fits you. I have a few or so S&W...A model 17 a couple Model 14s, a couple 19s, a couple 27s, a 28, 29, 57, 629, just sold my 686....you get the picture. Also a Ruger GP100 SS 4.2" that started the whole thing which I can't sell and is a hoot, but it's taken a few thousands rounds to smooth it out. I spent a lot of time with a diamond file cleaning up the trigger and guard because of sharp edges, the finish wasn't great but is now, and they are a tank. But still.....and then I got a whole bunch of Colts (Pythons, Anaconda, King Cobras, Trooper which is in the mail, Police Positive)....so. If I was to suggest? Go with a model 19 K frame. You can shoot .38 or .357, put a custom grip on it you like, and the trigger is amazing. If you are planning on shooting strictly .38? Get a Model 14 (K38 Masterpiece). Next to my Custom Shop Tuned Python, it has the best trigger I've ever used....and it's not much behind the Colt.

Maybe take a road trip up to GP, you're not that far away. We can have a range day and you can try the whole works.....TC

Amazing what happens when you use the search feature and set the filters correctly

Based on what I've read on VanMan and BCRider's posts on the Alfa's, I'm going to give their 9mm a go, in addition for saving up some pennies for a S&W 686. Thanks for all the input!
