Hey...just curious if there are any revolvers out there with 4 and 1/4" barrels. This would be the shortest I can have being that I only hold RPAL with no 12(6):(

I was really interested in getting a Colt Python with a shorter than 6" barrel. I already have the S&W 686 in 6".

I haven't seen any listed before...only the snake slayer derringer at Questar...which aint a revolver.

You can buy a 6" revolver and have a gunsmith shorten the barrel to 4 1/4".It might be hard for a python because of the vent rib.

what do you think the price range would be for barrel shortening...6" to 4 1/4"

I can buy a cheaper s&w and try it on one of them.

-thanks

Here is a couple pic's of my now 4.25" Ruger Super Redhawk that Gunnar @ Armco shortened for me.

I payed about $300.00 but I had other work done on another firearm at the same time so can't tell you exactly what I paid for the work on this gun.

So is it true that you will have the brand/caliber/model# partially cut off during shortening? Or is it cut from both ends and "centered" like someone mention in that other thread?

That is the main thing that has kept me from having my 686 shortened.

It might (I'm guessing) be a little tougher to maintain the accuracy of a python when cutting the barrel, they are taper bored from the factory. and then there's the rib....

Barry at Bits of Pieces shortened the barrel on my S&W 610 to 4.2" (slightly greater than 106mm and IDPA rules compliant) for $120.00.

Excellent work and I highly recommend him.

(I'll post some photos in a day or two)

He's next for me to contact...

got a quote from armco "The cost of removing the barrel, shortening it, crowning it and putting on a
new front sight, then rebluing and replacing on the gun, with a test fire, is
about $349". This is for one of the 586 s&w hes got on his website. Probably cheaper for a stainless finish revolver.

Have Barry at bits of pieces do it, armco is to say the least slowww......... and way overrated.

Barry Jensen at Bits of Pieces put a 107mm barrel on a S&W for me (to replace a 4" bbl.). I think it cost about $300. He has pics of the work at his website. The barrel profile was changed from the original S&W type. I like it.

At one time S&W would sell you a revolver with a barrel from 2" to 12", any length, in 1/4" increments. I have seen a pre model number N frame Registered Magnum with a factory 4 1/4" barrel. Beautiful gun, quite rare. They will be spendy if you come across one. Also, due to manufacturing tolerances, there are some S&W K frames that were sold as a nominal 4" barrel that actually do measure over 105mm. Again, not a lot of them around. - dan

This started out life as a 6" barrel.
It's not the best chop job but at least it is shorter now..4 1/4"
Who ever did the work did not make it look like a factory contour....they crowned it correct though and it shoots great.
