I have a S&W Model 10 with a 4” bbl and it’s currently registered as a 12(6) prohib. Can I get it re-barreled with a 3” bbl? Can I legally import a 3" bbl to do the job?

There have been short model 10's on the EE in the past couple of weeks and seem to show up quite often.

There is no question that it will be more practical to simply buy a 3" version rather than embarking upon this venture.

That said, I understand that it is possible, with the right (DFAIT) permits. DFAIT told me that the way to go about this was through the factory warranty station...that the factory warranty station was accustomed to the paperwork for the legal importation of what are classed as prohibited devices, these short barrels...and that the factory warranty station could get a permit to import such a barrel if it was deemed necessary. So its possible...it's just not practical.

If you still want to spend a thousand dollars replacing the barrel on a $400. gun, you could call M.D. Charlton.

I bet that he'll talk you out of it.

There is a gorgeous 3" model 10 for sale on the EE right now...buy it! :)

+1

I'd be all over that....;)

Yes, but it's often cheaper to buy a new gun.

Can I legally import a 3" bbl to do the job?

Yes, if pigs start to fly and CFO will grant you a licence for prohibited device... short barrel with your prohibited receiver is just a part, but without it, it's a prohibited device (special licence). Some businesses and gunsmith places have it, do you? If not, forget it.

I think it'd be a shame to hack a barrel down. Someone in the EE had such a mod done to a revolver he was selling. Looked great 'till you tried to read the stamping on the side of the barrel. :(

And selling it afterwards will not be as easy either. If I remember correctly, the above-mentioned gentleman had his on EE for quite awhile. Dunno if it ever did get sold...
