I recently bought an R22 from a fellow CGN'er. Here are some pictures. I should have some video up, and a "review" of some sort, by next week:

This is how the previous owner had it set up. I decided to change to a Bushnell "ACOG"-style ($200) red T-dot scope, which is working very well.

how's the quality?

I've heard rhineland products have bad build quality, but seeing pics like those make that hard to believe.

I've heard that too... that the various generations of R22s vary in quality. This one that I bought is built like an absolute tank though. If anything it might be built a little too sturdy, it is all metal except for the the stock, and is about as heavy as a comparable size AR-15 - by which I mean it is very heavy for a .22LR rifle.

I'll have more to say on the weekend, and I should have some good videos for you guys to check out. I'll post them on youtube and provide a link.

I have had four...still have two. All of the generations had outstanding build quality.....but some had engineering issues. There were alignment issues with some of the earlier ones which hurt chambering/extracting/mag alignment. In a nutshell: If you get a good one, they are fantastic! If you get a bad one....there's virtually nothing you can do to fix it 100%.

Heres one I've modded, my other is bone stock and pretty much unused :D

Here's a video shot yesterday (Sat., June 30) at PoCo.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tg0m45-9dHg

The pattern I am shooting is 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 2 (20 shots). That might not be totally clear from the low quality of video (which gets worse when you put it on Youtube).

I'm still not ready to give a review of the R22. I'm going to try a few more types of ammo before doing a review.

Here are some disassembly pics of my R22. Everything is pretty much self explanitory. As I understand it, this model (and most of the others) has a Ruger 10/22 bolt inside a proprietary Rhineland upper and lower receiver, with an AR-15 trigger group. Having taken it apart, I can tell you that most of the weight of the gun is in the bull barrel. The alloy components (most of the rest of the gun other than the stock) are actually pretty light. Two of the photos show the short "restricted" barrel that came with this package when I bought it. I haven't tried it yet. I'll have to look at the Firearms Act to see if there is any way to "try out" the little barrel at the range for a day without reclassify the gun as "restricted".

The later models did away with the ruger bolt and went with a rhineland manufactured one. As far as your short barrel? A legal way for you to do it is to go to the range (assuming you have a restricted PAL or go with a friend who has one) with the long barrel in place, and swap it to the short one while at the range. Because it is being transported as non restricted, and only becomes a restricted AT the range, no ATT is needed.

I have an ATT and numerous restricted firearms, so that is not a problem. I've never taken the barrel off of this firearm before, though. Will it just twist out? What do you guys with similar rifles use to get them out? Is there a tool for doing it or can it be done by hand?

Has anybody replaced the extractor on their R22 with a Volquartsen? I've found that extraction problems can be cured with better quality ammo, but I'd like to be able to shoot cheap ammo more confidently with this rifle. I'm thinking that might be the way to do it. There is somebody on this board that sells Volquartsen extractors isn't there?

For ammo, I've found that CCI Stingers and CCI Mini-mag round nose work well. CCI Standard Velocity also pretty well. The later two cartridges are round nose and the Stinger has a very "roundish" nose with a small hollow point. Ammo with a bigger, flatter hollowpoint, like CCI Velocitor, does not work very well with this rifle.

What ammo do you guys use in your R22s? I just came across an absolutely TERRIBLE box of American Eagle copper plated. I think I am sworn off of AMerican Eagle .22LR ammo for good now. The stuff would barely work in my other .22LR guns like my 20,000+ rounds Walther P22 which will generally take anything no problem these days.

I'm going to go get some more Stingers and some more Standard Velocity. Mini-mag round nose are hard to find in the shops in Vancouver right now. I just bought the last 4 boxes (of 100) from Reliable last week. Everything is hollow-point for Mini-mags for the last 6 months or so. The four boxes of round nose they had were "hiding" downstairs behind some boxes, so they tell me.

Understood, but your ATT won't cover the R22 unless you re-register.
Your legal requirements are to have an ATT for transport to a range if it is restricted....and seeing as it will be non-restricted while in transit the ATT is not required.

You have your RPAL, so do the barrel swap at the range and you are legally good to go.

As far as how the barrel changes, the barrel is threaded into the rec., then uses a seperate locking collar to hold it in place (uses the same threads) You will need a spanner wrench to loosen/tighten that nut (CT sellos them). MAKE SURE THE BOLT IS HELD OPEN when you unscrew/screw in the barrel! When the bolt is closed the extractor sits in the recess of the breech face, and when you rotate the barrel it will snap the extractor off. I have used both the VQ extractor and another (the name eludes me at the moment) with good results. As far as ammo, both my guns eat anything I feed them.

Hey Ghostie,
we chatted briefly at the range a while back about your P22, I thought it was a Mosquito with the work you had done to it. Anyways I'm currently waiting for my own Rhineland R22, hope to see you up there soon!!

Cool. You found a used one? I look forward to seeing you up there with it.

I must admit, I have been having a fair bit of trouble getting my R22 to cycle reliably since I got it. I believe I know what the problem is though. The extractor is totally worn out. I just ordered two Volquartsen Exact Edge extractors from the U.S. They should be here next week. My R22 chambers and fires fine, the mags are working fine, but extraction is hit and miss. The previous owner upgraded a lot of parts on the gun, but the extractor is stock 10/22. I know because my girlfriend has a stock Ruger 10/22, and the extractor looks exactly the same. The extractor in the R22 seems to be dull and the spring doesn't seem very strong either. I hoping that the Volquartsen extractor and a new spring will do the trick. I'm going to replace the extractor on her 10/22 as well. The Ruger ones seem to really suck, especially after a few thousand rounds.
