A very good friend of mine (American) fought in Rhodesia for a couple years. We've had many cherished long conversations about it.
I recall asking what they zeroed their FAL irons at figuring it might be 250/300 but turns out they zeroed at 100 because when they engaged with the Ters they were always right on top of them, usually responding to being ambushed.
He commanded a squad of black Rhodesians and had real issues with them doing mag dumps and running away. Didn't take too long until he modified all their rifles personally for semi-auto only and removed all their slings. No matter what the situation if the rifle had a sling they had it over their shoulder instead of in front of them at the ready while on patrol. Obviously a real problem in that situation.
Another amazing SOP is while patrolling they had safety off and finger on the trigger at all times. Not one accident. Very different procedure from today. He made it perfectly clear if you didn't patrol in this manner and couldn't return fire in an instant you died.
Man, sure do wish I recorded every one of those conversations. So much fascinating information.
Def sounds like a great person to have conversations with!!! Thanks for sharing!!!
