Rib Mounted VS Receiver Mounted Red Dots

I have slowly moved to dots on my guns as my eyes get older and I currently have two shotguns with receiver mounted red dots. Been running these for a while and they fit me well / serve the intended purpose.

One of the mounts stripped a screw recently (so will need replaced) and combined with seeing other guns with rib mounted red dots I started to wonder which was best. I never considered rib mounted before as I thought they looked goofy (too far forward and kinda awkward) but the more I thought about it the more it made sense.

One advantage that I was told is that being rib mounted the red dot feels more like a pistol in that the dot is further away and as such a little more forgiving for eye box / picking it up, but the major advantage is that rib mounted will hold zero when you strip the gun and put it back together (receiver may move a little and need rezeroed - this has been my experience).

I have picked up some rib mounted mounts and have setup one of my A400s with a rib mount and the other already had a receiver mounted optic. I plan to rest them back to back but I am curious as to what anyone else has found with regards to the two options?

I picked up a couple of Meadow Creek mounts.

One didnt fit and I reached out to the company. They emailed back to apologize and advised that they would send the correct mount.

I woke up to my phone ringing this morning and it was the owner of Meadow Creek mounts calling to confirm everything so he could make what I needed today and get it on its way to me.

It has been a while since I have experienced this kind of service but it was very pleasant and refreshing.

Interesting concept, I might try one of these out 👍
My wife has always mounted red dots on rifles as far forward as humanly possible lol, her preference, I think she would love this setup

I maybe the odd one but when the red dot is mounted far out on the rib I end up focusing on the dot not the target and my scores dropped. When the dot was up close to my eye over the reciever so that I could see the target clear thru the glass the dot was much more natural
I still shoot the odd round of skeet with a red dot mounted 410 turkey gun

I would imagine this is something that a guy would have to try for themselves to see if it’s viable for them. I’m willing to give it a try, but can see how it would be an entirely personal thing 👍
If I don’t like it, I will throw it on the wife’s shotgun, I know she will like it. I’ll probably pick up the universal model just for that scenario

For turkey hunting im sure id like it but ive tried it for ducks and skeet and I ended up just ignoring it and focusing on the target. With the needed leads having it at the end of the barrel was useless. But thats just me. I've seen advertisements where theyre said to be good. Digweed even tried one type and said it worked however im still skeptical he was using the dot and not just muscle memory

Id be interested to hear your findings using one when you get to try it

I have been busy of late and haven't gotten around to trying it yet but from the little bit of mounting I have done after fitting it I wasn't noticing that. I do think the receiver mount looks better / more natural but thats probably because I have been running that style of setup for a long time and am very used to it. It definitely has limitations however.

I plan to try rib mount and receiver mount back to back on two A400s. Should be interesting.

I have to recommend Meadow Creek, the kit fitted perfectly on my rib and seems well made, the price was reasonable and they didn't take long to get here.

For the one that was wrong their customer service was stellar.

I don’t like the idea of using a red dot for wing shooting, seems needless and counter intuitive. I will put a meadow creek mount setup on my 870 20ga for turkey hunting, that setup looks slick.
