Well here goes on this project. Bought a laminate stock for Beaner's Stevens 200 in 308win. Came to the door in anticipation. Just under $150 Canadian delivered to the door. Autumn Leaves is the color which I think is a real close color to Boyd's Royal Jacaranda color scheme. It came with a Decelerator 1" pad installed and swing swivel studs. Packaged well and I was told if I didn't like it to send it back full refund. Hard to argue this. Here are some photos of the stock and some issues with it.

Flaw in the laminate between colors. Couple of these to deal with.
This laminate stock came real chunky.
Here's the action and barrel on it without any modifications.
I borrowed an air sanding board from my body shop buddy. This one sanded
back and forth rather than oscilate. I figured to sand to and fro with the grain.
I used 60 grit to get the forewood taper from bottom up and the side to side shape. Works very well for keeping the wood flat.
I had to figure out a way to keep the blind mag in place. They made the blind mag well pretty big. I used some wood shims to start. I found that the blind mag was hard to feed the ammo in if the spacers were a bit large. Squishing the blind mag pinching the top lips. I finally made them (3) out of aluminum. I found an aluminum mudflap in the man shop. In the photo below in the bottom left hand side you will see them.
Here they are again and fitted.
Oh yah, if you're not hurt'in, you're not work'in.
Next thing to contend with is the trigger guard. The inletting was to narrow and not deep enough for this guard. Later I found out that Savage would sell the proper one for Richard's stock work. Twenty dollars and there would of been no fuss or muss. I needed a longer forward action screw as well. I had our smith make me one with a slotted head to work for now. The stock Stevens are 1/4" by 28tpi and you need it just a bit longer than 1 1/4". This machine screw if installed too long will impede the bolt locking lugs. It does go into the receiver cavity. If I did this project again, I would order the steel trigger guard and the longer screw to match the other two. Twenty, two and about ten dollars for freight. Would of been well worth it.
Trying to figure out what to do with the rose wood tip was another adventure.
I ended up tapering it back slightly on the bottom and used my 1/4 sheet palm sander and using 80 grit sand paper, I just rocked it back and forth and rolled it at the same time to get the rounded shape. I would shape it a bit and move on to the other tasks and come back to it. This was happening with the grip cap as well.
The bottom of this side of the stock in the red part of the laminate had a couple flaws where the next color was coming through. It looked like a couple of scratches and it drove me nuts. I prefered this look but I knew after spending all this time on this project and let this slide would get to me. So out comes the air board sander again. I sanded the next layer off. Then the recoil pad needed to be fit again to match the wood. This is something I have never done before.
There should be a stickie on fitting after market pads. P!ssmeoff. I finally got
it to look good.
So there you have it. Bunch more photos but I think I've taken enough space.
Pink cammo belt, well Beaner's is my daughter who loves to fish and hunt.
Does a good job at grouping better than her pa.
Ya, eye know, the scope sucks. That will be replaced hopefully soon. Found a
couple used Leopolds for $250 each. Var X11 3x9x40 and the other is a 3x9x50.
I have a couple Elite's on my rifles and enjoy them for shooting. Seem to work
well and no problems with them.
I finished this stock with Varathane Pure Oil Finish and after the second coat had enough.
Wiped off what I could and lightly sanded it with 400 grit and went after it with Tru Oil. Not a good experience. Three more coats of this and let it dry. Hit it with 0000 steel wool between coats. Had a bunch of droops to deal with. The last coat that went on I had my heat gun in my hand and rotated the stock for about a half hour with the heat gun on it so I didn't have to deal with droops, runs or a marathon. Next project will be with Min-wax. This stuff works for me.
