For gopher shooting on a 160 ac piece of property with neighbors close by would you choose a .22 rimfire or .223 with either hollow points or the Hornady Sxsp bullets? I am worried about ricochet. Don't know if this is the best forum to ask this question. Thanks-Karl

I'd lean toward .22rf. Even though the SXSP is very fragile and would work well. DO you have neighbors buildings on all sides of the property? A richocet in any direction is bad but if you have buildings on only one edge of the property, start your slaying there and work away from it.

Other benifits for the 22rf is it is quieter than the .223 to keep the annoyance to a minimum, and it is cheap to shoot too.

The .22 rimfire is very ricochet prone. The .223 with light bullets isn't. While the .223 is louder if your round hits a rock it will shatter. That's why I use either 40 grain Federal Premium loads or 40 grain V-Max handloads. If noise were a problem I'd probably go with a .17HMR and a light bullet which would give the best of both worlds.

Noise is not a problem , nor is proximity, we chose our shots carefully to avoid the ranchhouses in the area. Just concerned about the bullets deflecting away from where we are shooting and possibly causing a problem, my buddy has thousands of gophers and they need to be eradicated.

I typed out a reply then read Claybusters Post........
I erased mine and am Quoting his.....
Can't say it much better;)

Have to agree about 22 rimfire bouncing while 40gr Nosler BTips from my 22 250 explode on contact with ground

btw where do you find good gopher patches? I have been able to find only a couple in western Manitoba and spent quite a bit of time looking.:runaway:

Karl,
another thing to keep in mind is how close it is to the City. Depending on the property location you might not be able to use any firearm. :-(

What everyone here says is making more sense all the time, I've only ever used a .22rf so I should keep my yap shut. I did nail a yote not long ago with a varmint bullet in a high powered rifle, hit it high in the back and yet the bullet did not exit! I am impressed to say the least.

Have fun!

CCI quick-shocks in 22LR are loaded with a frangible bullet that will break up on impact. This is really the best of both worlds, low cost, low noise, low chance of a ricochet with the only downside being limited range. If they arent readily available locally, a 22 centerfire loaded with a varmint type bullet would be my choice (like most have mentioned above).
