Ricol Brand Shotguns

IMO, from a hunter's perspective, these are a novelty guns - a conversation object in this sense. They are neither handy nor useful for most hunting purposes... and spare me the cr@p like "handy in dense alders, brush, undergrowth, thistles, devils club, rose bushes, hazelnut, etc.

Btw. I've never seen anybody do good shooting with them - either range or field! Except maybe, the shooting channel guy with a DA backpacker hitting clays thrown from his coat's pocket.

Only a poor craftsman blames his tools so if you can't shoot it doesn't mean the rest of can't. Given that a lot of us bow-hunt this shotgun is not a "novelty gun" - the ranges are very similar and this is very effective and I do not just sit in a stand, I still hunt and stalk with both bow and gun so having something that is handy is nice, it makes less noise and doesn't get tangled. Rabbits especially can be in the deep briars and if you go into the deep brush for grouse there are times it is nice not to have a 28" long barrel. Perhaps you should give it a try before you knock it.

Only a poor craftsman has poor tools! I'm not knocking the gun per se it just has no use to me. If the bush/brush is too thick then I send the dog in. Less noise (not to talk about the noise level when you fire them things) and nothing gets tangled at all. Yes I've tried shorty shotguns and found that I have no application for them.

Poor Craftsmen? Pretty bold statement given you don't know some of the hunters on this thread. Some of us have some pretty high end firearms and much more experience than you may think. If you are not knocking it ("Novelty Guns") and have no use for it then move along. No need to jump in on a thread if you are not an enthusiast.

Ricol gets ‘er done!

So my conversation piece novelty shotgun killed a 21lb Tom thismorning adding to the body count.
8-3/4” beard. Called him into 20 yards was home by 7am.

Thanks, those are Truglo chokes that I found at Epps. I also have a couple Undertaker (I think) tubes for it too but I seem to have misplaced those. lol
Anyway my preference would have been to use the Federal shells with the Flightcontrol wad and a mod choke but I can't seem to lay my hands on those in 3" so I put the tight tubes in and used Winchester 3" 1-7/8oz #6. It patterned decent with that combo to 35yds.
At the 20yd range I could've used any shell and that bird was done for but you just never know how close they'll come.

Do you find that the various chokes you tried make a difference on the pattern/performance of the gun? I am running the chokes that came with the gun but I may consider some new ones if they improve the gun's performance.

Cheers!

I think the chokes that come with the gun are useable for sure. I bought extra tubes so I can put the same constriction in both barrels.
When it comes to really tight turkey chokes finding the right combination between gun, choke and shell is everything.
I don’t spend too much time on this gun figuring out the perfect choke, shell combo like I do with my Citori or Remington. It’s possible to get carried away with that stuff, trust me lol.
I will pick up a couple rifled tubes for it someday soon too. And maybe mount a scope on it too. Hmmm....
