Riddle me this

Gotta have nice wood & a Leupold ... caliber don't matter much as long
as it's got enough "ouch" to properly dispatch whatever you're hunting
... with a well-placed, well-constructed bullet.

It's all "personal choice" ... if you're dumb enough to ask anybody elses opinion about rifles, you deserve the answers you get :slap:

Seems I remember a guy who, when asked about what rifle, recommended the 505 Gibbs for everything ... :p

The best rifle or cartridge is what you have in hand while afield. That being said, the .30-06 would probably be the most popular suggestion, and for good reason: It's as good as any, and better than most. You know what? I think I need a .30-06.

Do I need a muzzle break?
No, but crazy_davey does for his anti pumpgun comment. :shotgun:

505Gibbs,
I automatically assume that they already have a 30-06 and 6 other rifles that do approximately the same thing. That leaves me free to recommend a .375 H&H, 7mm STW and 22/250. Quite simple really.;)

Story...

When I bought my first hunting rifle I had been looking for several weeks at a few stores. This was back in 1980, when even the tiny town of Swan Hills Alberta had 3 different gun stores... I long for a return to those days...

But anyway the sports store in Westlock advertised a hunting sale and they had "great deals" on their guns (so the ad claimed). So I went down there and they did have a helluva selection. Mainly Winchester and Ruger and there mighta been a Savage... and the ugliest ####ing Remington ADL in .30-06 that you ever saw. The guns I was looking at were all .30-06, 7mmRem, .300WM calibers...

I kept looking at all these guns and I'd pick 'em up and sight and try to handle them, but none of those guns felt right. Finally the only gun left that I had not tried was the Butt-Ugly Remington ADL. That thing had a blind magazine; no floor plate, a hard plastic "recoil" pad and a hideous gloss plastic finish on the wood.

BUT... the instant I picked up that rifle and brought it to my shoulder I knew it was the one. It fit me perfectly and I bought it immediately.

Epilogue:
I'm on the 3rd stock for that rifle. I had the original stock sanded and an oil finish applied; broke that one on a moose hunt. Then I bought a stock from a Remington classic that I guess someone had changed to fiberglas; shot a moose with it at a measured 280 paces 2 days later. The action just dropped into that classic stock and the (Redfield) scope was still bang on!
Finally I got a cutom fiberglas stock put on it by K&S Arms, Edmonton and the rifle still has that stock. I never post pics of my guns cuz they're pretty beat up (from hunting) compared to the bling-age most guys post here.
So most people would turn up their nose at it still, just as I did back in 1980. But that rifle will still put 5 handloads inside 1" if I'm on.

Moral of the story...

I guess buy a .30-06... that fits... :)

Why, when someone asks about buying a new RIFLE everyone immediatelly jumps in with their fav chambering???

Now the chambering is very important but it is only one part of the complet rifle system. But noone talks about fit, sights, stock etc!

Just wondering.

Holy loaded question Batman:D
Unfortunately the Hunting/Shooting community is small enough that advice is often sought on the internet!:(
What kind of hat should I buy for hunting T-Rex in my backyard?:runaway:
