Riding a moose...?

With a mortality rate of about 50% as far as i have heard for young moose through the winter, thats not a all that good thing to think...

No reason to try to make it 51%
My viewpoint is: It was funny to watch. I don't think they were demons nor do I wish them any physical harm. I'm glad that it ended up with moose and people getting out unharmed. What I hope for is that they will end up in front of a court and the judge, still laughing his head off after watching the video, will hand them all stiff monetary penalties and suspend for a year or more any hunting licences they may have so they learn that; stupid games come with stupid prizes.

This little stunt has generated 13 pages of commentary. If the moose rider was after 15 minutes of social media fame (infamy?), he got it.

I see evidence of yahoo behaviour all the time in areas where I hunt. The perpetrators are usually urbanites, not the kids of locals who live out here. They know better. ATV's and 4x4 pick ups roaring through fish bearing streams to create a mud bog (the better to get stuck in before asking a local for help getting unstuck), unattended fires during a fire closure season, litter of al kinds (to include beer cans and bottles which cannot be taken home for disposal), etc., etc.

Ask a Conservation Officer what he thinks about coming up on a moose in a power boat and then riding it. I believe the penalty for such an act would be pretty severe and make the guilty party look pretty stupid in the eyes of the law.

I live on a lake and it's not unusual to see moose or bears swimming across the lake. It has never occurred to me to harass them in any way as I realize they could be escaping predators and/or stupid people.

It matters not what cruelty or stupidity people have been guilty of in the past. We exterminated the buffalo, killed off the passenger pigeons, endorsed #### fighting and dog fighting for sport along with a host of other behaviours now regarded as barbaric. The best hunters I've known have had a profound respect for the game they hunt, often turning down shots, not willing to kill something just because they can.

Just read it. Seems this behaviour is against the law, as it should be. Pulling a brain dead move like that is bad enough but recording it and putting it out there for everyone to see indicates a deeper level of stupidity. Moose are having a tough enough time right now as it is.

However you look at it,stupid or not,you need a balls to jump on a moose back and ride it.
It is still a wild animal,we are comparing humans and moose while talking about stress.
This moose is probably more afraid of wolves or bears than this guy riding it.
For moose this is probably just extra weight on the back,no more...

Have read some but not all of the thread. Hope someone has mentioned this.

Is it not time to close the thread? Does this site want to be a forum for illegal and unethical stuff?
Its all in good fun....for some....but distasteful for most at least. Why tar all the members and site with this BS?

Yes , we have a__holes here as well . Every once in awhile some jerks on snowmobiles will see a coyote or deer out on the lake , and thinks its funny to run the animal to death with their machines . Every time the animal tries to make it to shore and into the woods , they cut it off and drives it back out onto the ice until it finally dies from being exhausted . Sadly , there has been so many budget cuts to Natural Resources that we seldom ever see a Forest Ranger out on Patrol anymore....a pretty sad state of affairs when people actually find enjoyment in pulling stunts like that , and thinks it is funny....

I make no apologies for naming urbanites as being a major part of the problem. In this community, most are too busy running their agricultural and animal husbandry operations to do much joy riding. The people I meet out in the boonies are invariably from town. Same for winter sledding. Many more snowmobiles in town than out here.

When I lived in Merritt (south of Kamloops), the local sledders avoided the Britain Creek (near the old toll booths) area like the plague as every weekend it was invaded by hordes of sledders from the lower mainland with super tuned machines. Not much snow on the lower mainland of BC. These guys caused no end of trail maintenance problems and incursions on private property. There were reports of game harassment from locals.

It's the same mentality of dirt bikers that think nothing of chewing up trails created and maintained by mountain bikers. There is a yahoo mentality in some people who think because they can do something, they should. Those of you who belong to clubs with unsupervised ranges know what I'm talking about. If you leave it out, someone will destroy it - just because they can.

Like gunexpert007 said - there is not enough law enforcement out there and people are taking advantage. The daughter of a pal just graduated a four year course that qualifies her to be a CO. Think she has a chance of getting hired in BC? Not bloody likely.

Quadders too. And they are from all over. There's just more from the lower wasteland due to population numbers. I'm sure there are plenty of yahoos from Kamloops, Kelowna, Vernon, Williams Lake and PG too. This is a bit off the "moose" topic, but there seems to be an increasing reliance on gas-burning appliances to enjoy the outdoors. I know when I've been out camping I see families with mom and dad on quads and little Billy and Molly on kid quads. Whatever happened to taking your kid for a walk in the bush or a paddle in a canoe?

and LOCK

1. Any discussion and/or promotion of illegal activities.

Harassment of Wildlife, is illegal.

Stupid too,

As on poster posted a story about some young guys that thought it would be funny to ride a moose but they roped it to the boat, and whenteh moose hit the shallows it was angry and did a little stomping on the passangers and destroyed the boat.

now I could give infractions to anyone that posted encouraging this activity but I don't have time so only a few special few will get one.
