riffled slug through what size choke?

Hello I just bought my first shotgun, a 12gauge Mossberg 88 (Field), with a modified choke(Accu-choke). My question is can I fire a riffled slug through this choke? or do I need a Improved choke? Thanks for your help.

Yes you can, most 870 police are mod ckokes and we fire #00 buck and slug

generally open chokes give better accuracy with rifled slugs however keep the lead out as this is the main destroyer of accuracy with them, thus the tighter the choke the faster and greater build up of lead and poorer accuracy sooner

i find IC and modified best depending on the gun. cylinder bore is the worst by far.

many old-timers swear by shooting foster style rifled slugs through full chokes but ive never tried it... just doesnt seem to make sense to me. i know these slugs are soft and rifled specifically to compress through chokes but i just cant bring myself to try it, full chokes are awful small compared to cylinder bore.

so do you think it would be o k to shoot slugs out of a mossberd 835 ulti mag with a modified choke.it says on the barrel not for slugs but i like to carry a handfull of slugs in the woods but not much good if i cant fire em.the only reason i can see for not shooting slugs is it has a ported barrel.

modified is fine, but the reason they dont want you to shoot slugs through an 835 is because the barrel is overbored to nearly 10ga dimensions. it would not stabilize a slug properly.

so thats the bad news. the good news is that a brand new slug barrel for your gun is only $150 at SIR.

I fired slugs outta full choke just to prove you can. I know a guy who firmly believed they would blow the end of the bbl off, I said "watch this".
You get a bit more kick & lousy accuracy with a full choke imo. But they have taken their fair number of deer back in the day when most shotguns you never had an option or choice of choke. I have fired slugs thru my RCT (rifled choke tube) on my Win 1200 and I can honestly say they are accurate out to 100yds and damn good at 50yds, but it leads up...quickly! The way I look at it is after you zero, scrub RCT really good cause you should only need 1 shot,
