Been reading this thread as I have a bit of time at work. Kills me every time I do this as then I dream, and when I dream I end up spending money for things I don't really need, but find interesting and a great hobby.
I started looking at a 6BR build for my daughter that wants to get into shooting, and may just order a new barrel for the cadex R7 action I already use for my 6.5 CM bench rifle as it is near end of barrel life. Would be nice to build her her own rifle and then I can continue to use mine.
Any ways I started looking at different actions, and have always wanted to try the left bolt, even though I'm a righty, and she is as well. Just seems more intuitive, especially is just single feeding rounds and using a sled adapter. I did the single feed on the last 1000m marksman challenge in late July and it seemed to work fine, even though I was just using a standard mag in there and single feeding. The thought of a left bolt or a right bolt and left port has me intrigued on that whole set up again.
This started years ago when I got a tactical solutions 10/22 recvr with the ability to mount the bolt handle on the left side, even though it is a right eject bolt. This actually works quite well and is very intuitive running the bolt with the left hand while holding the rifle with the trigger hand/ right hand. Just flows better.
Then I see the terminus has the quick change barrel feature that use set screws to keep the barrel on instead of the standard higher torque that you need that gets you using a barrel vise, action wrench system. When I decided to have my first custom rifle built I remember reading about guys just snapping the barrel on and not using a barrel wrench and not having any real issues with it. I ended up getting the smith to put it on proper, and when I put together my latest 6.5Cm I went the barrel nut route.
I'm using the cadex r7 action now, with a "savage" style nut and find it awesome to be able to remove the barrel easily for better cleaning, and find when I do this is it very little poi change after remounting things. Usually in the 5 or so rounds that I use to refoul a clean barrel I have the scope re set anyways and it has worked well like this.
Looking at the QC terminus style has me thinking why not use this system on a standard shouldered prefit? They plainly say in threads I was reading not to tighten the set screws on a standard threaded barrel as you can get galling and wrecking the threads and possibly screwing up the action threads. This is why they leave about 1/4" of the barrel unthreaded at the shoulder for this. Here is where my thinking process comes into play. Why not add a Teflon tipped set screw in there and tighten it on a standard threaded barrel and get the best of both worlds. Even further thought, why not take my existing action to a smith, or a machinist and have him drill and thread two holes to mimick the QC action and do this to my existing cadex R7 action? Then my next barrel for it can be a standard shouldered prefit, (which I like as they are a thicker, heavier barrel that just looks beafier" and get away from using the barrel nut style. This would still let me quickly remove the barrel for cleaning and in my view a win win.
Maybe "Guntech" can chime in and give some insight from the smith end of things if I'm way off base here.
I do like the "kauger" action for the dual port design.
