in a custom rifle what action would your recomend and how would you go about getting the action? i cant see buying a $1000 sako just for the action. i was just trying to roughly price out a full out custom, so far im at $1450 for mccmillain stock and lilja barrel.

I always thought a Mcm stock was around $400 US. There are alternatives of course.
For barrels, Gaillard, McClennan, McPhee, Smith are just a few of the best barrel makers on this planet. They just happen to be Canadians. Set you back $350 for just about any possible configuration. A great barrel can be had from Bevan King for around $150 to 200.
Quality install $150 from Guntech on this board. You can of course pay more but I see no point.
As to actions, you need to answer some of those questions first. I have used most commercial and military sporterised actions and they all work very well (all sub MOA rifles). At some point, it becomes a personal like and dislike issue.
If you want custom, you can always see if PGW has any actions kicking around.
Unless you really are set on certain bells and whistles, you don't need to spend more then $1500 to get a full meal deal drive them in one hole custom rig in the newest craziest wildcat or factory rd.
In fact, with proper tuning, some factory rifles will shoot in the same arena as custom hunting rifles (sub MOA). Remember a BR speced action for hunting will lead to function problems when conditions get dirty.

The McMillan A5 stock is a nice stock. Once you own a custom action you will never look back. Remingtons can shoot well when accurized (and sometimes do out of the box) but you are then faced the age old question of will you getting your money out of the gun when you sell it. Tikkas and Sakos will also work.
HS Precision has some new magazines which work pretty much with most new custom actions. Badger is another choice. Make sure you specify that action magazine assembly to be on the safe side. Bat machine also makes a great action.
This company makes an interesting action which I have been considering trying for some time.

As for old Military conversions.......well the old saying of you can put lipstick on a pig, but at the end of the day its still a pig applies pretty good. You'll see some pretty bizarre stock configurations on some of these conversions which pretty much says it all. You can even roll in the mud with it and because the of slop it might work fine :lol: :lol:

Funny, the most expensive and collectable bolt rifles both orig and custom are based on...Mausers. These rifles cost upwards of $20,000US (some have fetched much more). Recent custom Safari club rifle built on an orig 1903A Springfield fetched some really fancy 5 figure numbers.
Several top end custom rifle builders will build on nothing less then Mauser actions (orig or same design modern productions) for their clients. These clients are not the beer budget sort. Some of these actions are turn of last century derivatives.

And so it goes.
BR custom actons are truly interesting as works of machining. They can produce amazing accuracy and when set up properly can function even if things get a bit mucky. Like F1 cars, they push technology, a very narrow sliver of technology, forward to accomplish a very small set of goals. However, F1 cars don't fit all driving needs.
Never discount designs that have been used and abused in all manner for well over a century. The very best custom builders in the US and Europe still hold these designs with approval.

103159 those surgon tactical actions looks preaty good to me, i like the idea of the build in rail. also the matt finished action Ive never really been into the bright and shinny. now just need to find somone that has match grade matt/ phosphidesed barrels, or can that be done later to stianless barrel?

Actually, I think you can buy a "round" pgw action for the stated price. The upgraded (more labour intensive) integral rail is more costly.
The upgraded (integral rail) PGW is also has a flat bottom and includes an integral rail. Probably a stiffer as well. The bolt stem is threaded / screwed into the bolt body where as the Surgeon action has the knob threaded into the handle.
The Surgeon is presently only available in short action with the LA coming out several months down the road. This particular action is kind of cross between the Timberwolf PGW style and their round action (remington style).
Bolt fluting is very similar between the two (unless PGW has introduced some new or updated models).
As far as matching the barrel finish to the Surgeon action, a person would need to know what they have done on the their receiver.

Hi Gopher Slayer: the first thing to do is find yourself a good gun smith and put this same question to him, he'll have some good advice. They like to work with the rem700 and the win70 actions. The action you referred to is not normally used if other choices are available. Take care Bill.

Here is a nice one I have up for grabs.....Tony Boyer in the USA has cleaned up with a similar Farley Action in 6ppc. This one is suitable for 308 or 260Rem size. Ejector with a .308 bolt face.
