Rifle advice 9.3x62

Shot a demo Merkel MHR16 in 9.3x62 a couple years ago and ordered one with a walnut stock soon after, took forever to get. Amazing rifle. Topped it with a like new vintage W. German Schmidt & Bender 2.5-10x56 #4 reticule. Was intended for an Africain safari that won’t happen anytime soon. Sadly thinking about letting it go ATM. It’s still unfired with safety tag in trigger guard.

Been hearing about quite a few Zastava's with cracked stocks of late.
Know people who have older Huskies that absolutely love them.

If you like the CZ with full stock, there is a nice one on the EE for a reasonable price.

I'm a lefty, so I have ordered a LH Sako 85 Hunter in 9.3x62. Patiently waitnig for it to arrive...was told 6 to 12 months. Will match nicely with my 6.5x55.

I have a CZ 550 FS in 9.3x62. Shoots 285gr Lapua Mega's into a ragged hole at 100yds (0.64"). Grouping at 200yds was 1.45". Haven't tried them at 300yds yet. Great calibre. I'm sure you'll be happy with what you choose.

Where'd you get it? What's you pay for it?

I picked one up from Wolverine Supplies in '17 for about $1400 all told. My understanding is they make few of them now so getting a new one may be a bit hard.

With or without optics/rings?

The above price of about $950 makes them reasonable in price when compared to zastava's and model 70's, and better than rebarreled remingtons...

By far the best value available in a 9.3x62 is the Husqvarna FN98 Commercial, still available at Tradeex. The actions are smooth and overall the fit and finish is very good. Yes, recoil is stout but so is every 9.3x62 plus or minus. The x62 is a very versatile cartridge, load it to 9.3x57 specs for just about anything or extend your distance with x62 loads. I have two of them, and three x57's. You can spend a lot more money and not end up with anything better, IMHO.

They no longer produce this model. I spoke with the CZ rep's at the North Sylva Booking Show about the trend away from mid calibre Mauser actions. They want to compete with likes of Weatherby, Sako, Howa etc. If you can find a CZ 550 FS in the calibre you want in decent nick, and for a reasonable price I would go for it

The older Husqvarna's tend to be of very good quality. I already have mine, but if I were in the market I would look first at the FN M98 actions, then the 1600. Having the action glass bedded before you do a lot of shooting isn't a bad idea; these rifles have a reputation for developing splits at the tang.

I used a Husky sporterized M98 that came in 9.3x57. I made a 9.3x62 reamer with my lathe and mill out of O-1 tool steel. Worked not bad but I did have to hone the chamber quite a bit with 400 grit lapping compound to smooth it out. I bedded it with Devcon before I ever fired it because even the 9.3x57 recoil had hammered the action back in the stock.

Make sure to have a tiny bit of relief just behind the tang - wood stocks always flex a bit and the tang acts a wedge to split the wood.

How does the magazine feed the longer rounds?

I also agree about the Husqvarna FN Mauser 98 (and even the Swedish Mauser 96) in 9.3x 62.
There are some great deals on these right now and they won't last forever.
Everyone should have a few old Husky sporters of whatever caliber.

i have had a few Husky 98 's,they are great guns but I decided on a Brno ZG 47 installed a Benchmark barrel ,milled up some express sights and made a stock from some local English walnut.

Lengthwise they fit no problem and feeding is good without modifying the rails or ramp. I did shave back the extractor claw just a hair. However, I can only run 4 rounds in the magazine because the 5th is too tight. It will snap in and feed out but the feed rail gouges the brass as it slides out. I need to make about a mm more room somehow.
