Rifle Build Thread!

So where does this leave the specialist? I know stock makers that outclass guys that can do both. Metal guys the same. Is anything in a synthetic stock just a build? Did that synthetic stock just happen?

I freely admit that the area between what the guns I describe is a wide area of grey with many shades in between. I've seen some very nice stainless synthetics (including yours) that had some very fine custom work done by gifted gunsmiths. Largely it is very much open to interpretation and up to the person doing the interpreting. The "build" I describe and the "custom" guns also described are very much different and do not fall into that grey area.

What about a fancy wood stock on factory metal?

It's a factory gun with a custom stock, but is not a custom gun.

Are you two clowns going to post a pic of your rifle builds or just snipe away pretending to know it all?

Here's my 6CM BUILD! :)

Did someone sneak a bottle of sherry into the Alzheimer’s ward?

Would love to see Chucks guns, the only issue I can find with them is the bolts being on the wrong side

I like that stock. Fits me well. Not superlight, but nor I did not want a superlight rifle with the 24" factory sporter contour and heavy scope. No plastic. Fiberglass composite. Weighs about 8.5# as shown.

I'd buy another.

To me the difference between "custom" and "build" is somewhat loose but also simple. If it's an assembly of parts it's a build. If there is machine/metal work or custom inletting work it's a custom.

I have "built" many rifles by assembling parts (like AR15 or similar assemblies) but I lack the skills, knowledge and tools to chamber a barrel, cut threads, inlet for different bottom metal etc.

Also, I always thought the term "build" is sort of funny. I built a new wood shed in 2020 but I didn't call it a build, I said I built a woodshed. :)

Here is my latest, as of December 2021. The gunsmith sent me a couple of photographs while he was just finishing-up. A 1960 German Weatherby Mark V, refurbished and re-barreled from a 300 Weatherby to a 257 Weatherby.

Heres another Gary Flach built WSS of BC donation rifle from a cpl years back chambered in 6.5 PRC, built on a Kimber Montana 8400, 22 inch 1-8 twist Hells Canyon armoury barrel, high comb and palm swell added to the Montana Stock, this one was topped with Talleys holding a Swarovski Z3 3-10x42 BRH scope.

Theres a lot of good reasons we use Kimber Montana rifles for donors for custom builds, simply is the most reasonably priced complete lightweight package to rebarrel,

It has an excellent lightweight controlled round feed all stainless action, one of the best factory adjustable triggers made, a 3 position safety, a sturdy carbon fiber stock which you can alter and add stuff to, ie- palm swell, high comb, cheek piece, sand and paint if needed, now add in a good barrel and you pretty much have all the parts of a custom build in one package, of course now a days they are a little harder to come by and are almost fetching as much as new prices.

Most factory rifles are just fine for using as donor for building custom rifle on......but in most cases you are replacing the trigger ($200) and stock ($1000) to get to where you are with a Kimber Montana.
