Rifle build with optics on a $1200-1500 budget ($1080spent/rounds at 600m)

This is the first one I have tried and am pleased!

Oh have no fear I follow him closely, he is the reason I jumped on this one.
Though I find it funny how he takes the ammo temp, but if you watch him reload he doesn't take the same attention to detail.

Yeah I'm watching him as well, and took a bit of hiatus after getting to 30 something a few months ago lol. And damn man the ballistics section holy crap lol... Anyways yeah the SWFA aren't really sold here in Canada so you actually got a HUGE score! I think my next rifle if I ever decide to sell my current to get the new one will have to have a bushnell 10x on it for a while. Congrats on finding the unicorn man :)

Just found this thread.

I have a rifle that fits perfectly in this category. It is a Savage Precision Carbine 308 ($850 retail) with a 20 MOA rail ($100) and a Sightron SII 16X scope ($600). Last weekend I had it out smacking a 12" x 12" plate at 700 yds no problem. The OEM trigger is great. All the rifle needs is a bipod and ammo.

Alright fast update, I switched scopes. Found a deal on an SWFA SS 10x side focus model with flip up caps for $200 to my door, this let's me use the rings that came with the rifle and thus drop my cost by a bit! Plus with its 160 MOA (that's 4 over what they claim) of adjustment I shouldn't need a 20moa rail once zeroed.

Whoever sold you that was a dummy. Those scopes originally went for around $400 and they should be worth every bit of that price today based on the fact they are near impossible to find in Canada.

I have two of the original SWFA Tasco Super Snipers in 16x that I will hold onto forever. I had another two of the 10x but sold them years ago as the 16x works better for the shooting we do.

Hey all,

Been a long time sense I got to update this.

Work finally allowed me a weekend so with a buddy went out semi-local rock on Saturday and started to set up 30cm plates at 600m, 800m, 1100m, and 1500m. Its rough terrain so it took us a good part of the day. The rest of the time I had my bow trying to fill my tag, so no rifles came out with us due to regs.

So Sunday came around and we went back out, but to our surprise it seemed every ATV in the province decided to go out that day. Never seen this as an issue before. There is a trail that passes right by our firing point and goes in-front. It is a one way trail so if you go down, have to come back. So for safety sake, we grabbed our stuff headed to within 300m of the 1500m plate. No trails or people at this distance. Also because we felt rather annoyed with how the day was going and our hard prep the day before we packed up a plate and went for a rocky hike up the other slope to push a plate as far as possible, 600m.

Now sorry I don't have pics of the gps distance of these targets, hope you take my word.

So I had loaded up 80X210 Nosler Long Range Accubonds, and had 20X220 SMK left from previous load tests. Sense none of the day was going as planed I left the LRAB in the bag and just used the 220SMK being that they are half the cost for a box of 100.

Conditions;
Temp: 12.8C
Baro: 30.17inHG
Alt: 621m
Winds: 5-10kmh 12o'clock
Vari cloud/sun from the 12o'clock

So first round hits at 300m plate, was really happy at this because were using data for the 210LRAB and a little bit of feel. Was only 4-MOA from 100m zero. Next moved on to the 600m plate, achieved second round hit, this was partially because we could only see the top 4inch of the target due to trees, and we weren't walking back out there to fix it, also don't paint a target red in the fall! But second round hit on steel and gave us that all and good **TANG** we all love to hear. For 600m it was 13-MOA and for both had zero wind/drift hold off or adjustment. We fired off the rest of the SMK between my buddy and I, then went to the 308 we brought out.

This rifle keeps me amazed really. It still feels slick, loves the heavy's, doesn't seem to like anything under the 200gr, though still shoots them well, just not as well as the 200gr+ projectiles I have tried. I am up to 179rnds through it, and packing it over the rocky terrain this weekend didn't seem bad really.

The SWFA is a pretty wicked optic, clicks felt good, definitely not high end but you know your adjusting it. Clarity is well on pair+ with my Leupold 10x in field conditions. My buddy also pretty much said the same, and was amazed at the clarity for the 600m target. Still haven't fixed the parallax band yet, it is an annoyance though

If you noticed I also updated the price as I finally sold the barrel on here. So I am looking at $1080 total investment. This is great, well under budget for a semi custom rifle, and with hits at 600m already I feel no problems completing this task. I know everyone will say 600m is no 1200m, but this rifle seems to be a confidence boost every time I bring it out as it does exactly what I tell it to do.

When I get a chance at the farm were I know there is no ATVs and just the odd Cow I will complete this task for sure.

I'll keep you posted as often as possible.

The Super Sniper has a rubber O-ring inside the turret caps. Pull of the cap and give a bit of grease and it will feel much better.

Alright ladies and gents,

Sorry for the long time between updates, as with most work and other things have come between me and finishing this test. Though I better bite the bullet and get this done. Looking back at my posts it seems I am only a few months from being a full year sense the start.

I have found the load it loves, the 210LRAB are great. I only found one more box though so it went fast to more load data. I have 4 boxes on back order though and are awaiting those. I do have 11 left loaded but have not been able to get to the farm nor my other spot to give them a try(that and only going with 11rnds to try 1200m seems like setting myself up for disappointment for some reason). I will be hitting Epps this coming week maybe pick up some more 220smk, I found a load that it loves with them, and is fairly close to what the 210LRAB are. I still would like to keep just one load to hunt and shoot. This lack of the round it likes might have to change that though. I do have some 190LRAB but I don't know if its because I didn't spend the detail on the load data or not, but this rifle seems to only like weights in the 200gr+. Any heavy bullet I have put in it has just shot well right off the bat. That and my 308 loves the 190LRAB so hate to deplete those when they are also hard to come across. So I have only pushed it to 600m so far. It has worked flawless for that.

It still is my go to rifle when I need one. Though right now I have switched it back to BDL. Not because I didn't like the Rem DM just because I picked up a McMillan A5 stock for it in BDL and I don't feel like modifying the A5 the same as the HS. Just in case I don't like the A5 I can sell it. You maybe asking why I might not like it, mainly because of weight. The rifle as it sits right now is about10.5lbs loaded, that may seem heavy but it still keeps it in the realm of hunting rifle in my mind. With the A5 I know it will add even more weight. I will bed it and post the difference when I get a chance. Now don't worry I am not changing it over until after this test is complete!

I Have also been toying with optics choices for after this. I love this scope, tracks great crisp clear, and isn't even to bad in low light, had a wolf on the farm after the sheep and I could clearly tell the difference between sheep and the wolf at dusk within the scattering of sheep(country folk will know what I mean). I constantly go 600m-100m and throw the odd 300m in there and back and the scope has been extremely constant on its tracking. I keep thinking on a little more magnification though, but anytime I use it I don't see the reason why I need more. Though the little voice in my mind when not behind the rifle says "aim small, miss small" and I start looking at optics again. It could also be my old mindset that optics aren't supposed to be this cheap. I am guilty of the high end, optics cost more then the rifle type mentality. This one may stay with it long after the test is over though, as I have already stated it does compare well to my other higher end optics in the same magnification and objective sizes!

Anyways here is to hoping it doesn't take me much long to finish this, and I promise to keep you all more up-to-date on even the smaller load testing.

Merry Christmas

P's I know you all love pics, here is a trial fitting in the A5 stock, its the only pic I have on file at this time

Well a long winter has me out scouting my spot now, should be next week to be able to get out there. I am going to have to run the 220smk loads, the 210 LRAB are impossible to find, and I'm down to 10rnds saving them for next hunting season.

I'll keep you updated!!

Well it has been over a year sense last I updated.

I LOVE THIS RIFLE.

I actually have sold most my other bolt guns to try and fund a Blaser R8, but can't bring myself to let this one go. It regularly takes me anywhere up to and including 1500m, as long as I do my part.

It has come a long way sense last posted though. I couldn't leave it well enough alone.

It now rides in a McMillan A5 with ACIS mag, has a Timney 510 and has a Nightforce 3.5x15 56mm. Other then that its still the same. Ya, ya thats a big difference and well you would think it would have blown the budget out of the water. You are right, the Nightforce did do that.

As for the other add ons... it didn't.

For the mag system, I found someone selling an HS Precision stock off a Rem MLR 338LM with bottem metal and mag for $300 shipped to my door. Kept the mag system, sold the stock for $300. SO.... basically that was free. The 338LM mag feeds 300winmag without issue, and a bonus, it holds 6rnds

Timney 510 was $140 shipped NIB hadn't even been opened yet

So that would bring my to $1220

As for that A5, I kept it in there after I picked up the mag system. Sold the old HS stock for well $300 (trend happening on those stocks it seems) and my original price for the A5 was $500, so call it $200

That makes it $1420 with the SWFA.

So as it sat, that took me to what I needed in all its glory and well under the $1500 max out for budget.

But I ran into a snag, someone made an offer I couldn't refuse on the SWFA. So I broke down and sold it. I won't say how much I sold it for, because I felt dirty taking that money, but lets just say I put it towards the NXS and well its extra out of pocket cost my $700. So to play it safe I will add that to the total.

Brings me to $2120!

As for bi-pod I switched to a Parker- Hale I had. I drilled a hole into the end of the A5 stock and bedded to in there. This keeps it very low and allows excellent movement. Also is great for loading it up. I always had a thing for the Parker Hale bipods so I felt great being able to add it to this stock.

Of course this is useless without pics;

Now I know I might get some flames for painting that wicked color scheme I had going with the winter cam, stainless barrel and black action. I have an addiction to krylon though... its very hard for me to leave something not looking cam'd up.

Its heavy now, with current setup it weights in a 16.3lbs loaded. It feels balanced though. I wouldn't have to much of an issue hunting with it, as the quick detach of the Parker Hale bipod would allow me to shed pounds in a hurry. I keep the bipod in my side pouch of my bag and in a pinch its back in the game. As for carry, well its still lighter then some things a lug around all day, so it isn't an issue for me. Also still on the look out for a Blaser R8 and that will fill that role for sure. Then maybe I'll let this one go too....

I will make sure to bring my camera next time I go long as to submit proof of its capabilities.

Last time it was out, had gusting full value winds in the 12-26km range, took 7 shots to hit an 8inch steel at 900m. My spotter had no experience, was just a buddy out blasting away with me. Basically had him watch the tree bending behind that target and telling me when it stopped moving, "mmmmm nnnnnnnoooow, no wait, mmmm now shoot now" haha. It worked though and once I found the wind, shots were easy.

For loads I go between the 220smk, and the 210LRAB. I still save 200AB for hunting season though.

356Rnds down range sense I started this. I know should be more, but I do have to work and she only comes out to play on the field days.

So in the end, even though I am sitting here with a well blown budget I still think of this as a success. Look at the timeline of this rifle, its what I feel every new long range shooter should do. Start small and work your way up. Sure you can buy once cry once but what do you learn out of that? Nothing more then that you can read reviews and have a big credit card. Working your way up like this lets you pick and choose what works for you and your rifle and brings up your skill levels along with your rifle level. Also allows you to work within your budgets, and spend more on ammo and learning the fundamentals rather then not being able to purchase the ammo you need to learn. This is my personal opinion though.

As for that, she has been good to me, I'll try and get out soon enough for more field pics!

So, I have a chance at a weekend bear hunt. Work is allowing some time off. Sense I didn't bait, or have a stand, going to backpack hunt this one. When I opened the safe all I seen was a bunch of heavy barrels a 30-30 (also heavy barrel) and a 222rem. This is the rifle I pulled out though. Felt a we bit heavy to lug around on spot and stalk for a 4 day weekend. Sense I didn't have time to build another rifle, I just went into the local smith and found a lighter scope.

Vortex Crossfire II 3-9x 40

He gave me a wicked deal on it, so I mounted her up.

Wow big difference in feel. Scale doesn't have batteries otherwise I'd give you a weight difference. Looks fairly clear, and sense it is just for one hunt should do just fine. If I like the scope I'll move it over to a hunting style rifle after.

Looks funny I think though haha.

Sense I already know she loves the 200gr Accubond, that will be the round and load I'll use.
