rifle builder/gunsmith advice needed for a built

manitoba. mauser built, budget, prefer to keep it lower

Depending on what you want to have built, starting with a Mauser action (I suspect surplus?) will limit some of your options and will make some options considerably more expensive than say the same part for a 700.
The more info you can share the better advice you will receive.

was looking at a 10.75x68 mauser build. surplus action or zastava action. i have no idea what this type of thing even costs. perhaps just finding a used cz 404 jeff might be more sensible? or a used 10.75?

Jury barrel: 425 bucks
Corlanes install: 350 for weird calibers
Pillar bedding: 150
Blueing or cerakote: 200-300
Aftermarket or trigger tuning: 150-350 with install/ various brands
Case hardening, stock work etc: not budget by any stretch of the imagination, especially if you use an experienced artisan like Flach, martini etc ( no shade on anyone else mentioned these guys are specialists and in another league)
Realizing that you get can buy someone else’s custom on the e.e for less than these gunsmith fees: priceless

The good thing about Mausers is you can buy rifles that have what would cost literally thousands of dollars in smithing fees for under 1k and usually under 500 bucks on the e.e.

I would start on a p-hale or old sporterized reciever to save money. Zastava builds for non giants will require a reduction in LOP and a new non hockey puck pad. I think the last time I had this done with bedding it was ~350 bucks. They do have good, adjustable triggers which is a budget consideration. Adjust it yourself or they may charge you for a trigger job on it, ask me how I know. Very simple

We are verging into the realm of personal opinion here but zastavas come in hogs back stocks that will amplify recoil or raised comb stocks that are uglier than hell and do not work well with irons ( for me at least, but I’m no giraffe, more of a gorilla)

There’s a RMR 404 Jeff on the EE for a more than reasonable price or was, I’d check that out

Custom and Low Budget don't normally mesh. If you already had an action and stock, would be a start.

If you need to buy an action, barrel, smithing and have a stock made, you will be $5000 +.

If you just buy a surplus mauser from tradex and a new barrel, could likely keep it under $2k

Buy a zastava in 458/375/300/9.3

Rebarrel it. Send bolt for bolt face opening up and extractor work.

Call her a day. Probably 1500.

Or buy the one in 404 jeffery on the EE for 1600

If you went with a 500 jeffery build you can get gunsmith special 50cal barrels for 100$ to use as a blank and ill lend you a 500 jeffery reamer. Fits a long action no problem
