Hi folks, I'm looking into building a bit of a custom hunting rifle from a Husqvarna 146 in 9.3x62. It won't need anything particularly crazy done to it, but it will need some stock work, rechambering (not rebarrel), sights, safety, bolt handle, bedding, bluing, etc. Who would be a good smith/gun builder for this? I am located in Alberta.

Here's a picture of what I am looking for:

Gary Flach have one he made(Brno I believe) a beauty!
Send him a message , he’s a great guy to deal with!
G.E.Flach on here I believe!

Thanks for the great suggestions, folks. I had a good call with Chris yesterday and will go ahead with him for this work. I'll be at the Calgary gun show Friday and will get to see some of his work first hand there as well.

The rifle is chambered in 9.3x57 now. Husqvarna 246's (9.3x62 from factory) are very uncommon. 9.3x62 fits what I am looking to do with the rifle, but I can still keep the rifle light and slim as I don't have to step up to a 375 H&H. I was originally thinking of some weird chambering as well, but I already have enough weird cartridges!

tokguy: I would love to see some pictures!

Thanks for all the help :)

I think a rifle like that with a 20" bbl in 9.3x57 would be very cool.

Nice rifle!

The slight bore difference seems to aid in packing it. I used to have a SAA in 357... Then you handle a friend's in 45 LC and it feels somehow smoother for the lesser steel in the chamber's and bbl?
Like that. I've a 3/4 length K98 with a Kahles...doesn't pack anywhere as nice.
Can tell it gets packed a fair amount...the comb on the stock has the finish 'lightened' from being packed. A glove or a coat sleeve has rubbed on it a bit ..honest wear right there.

I talked to Chris today at the gunshow, very nice, down to earth and entertaining guy. Selling a 375 and 9.3x62 both amazing wood and metal work for ~ half of what it would cost to have the work done at 5300 bucks. Think they were on an FN and argentine action. Also had a very nice 275 rigby (to be pronounced in a British accent apparently) on a Mexican small ring reciever; beautiful gun.

I don’t know if I’ve ever seen better done Mausers or maybe even Rifles. The modern rigby rifles have nothing on these; he said they looked like Parker Hales and very obviously has the skill to back that kind of talk up. Very talented guy. Would love to have him do his thing on a barrel blank. If I ever have 10k burning a hole in my pocket he will be on speed dial.

I also spoke with Chris today. Really enjoyed our conversation. I am sending him my rifle to work on…his work at the show absolutely spoke for itself.

conor90 summed up everything else perfectly!

Id guess they're the same rifles he had on consignment at Prophet River. They’re a steal at $5300, on par with any other big name gunsmith.

A slight Schnabel tip on my forestock is the only apparent difference.
Mine has a Mauser SSR and a 23.5" bbl on it

Yours still looks to be in factory configuration. Mine looks identical to yours currently. The one I pictured as an example has a bunch of little things done; pad, steel grip cap, trigger, bolt handle, 3 position safety, QR mounts, new front sight, checkering on the front, ebony tip, bluing, etc. I’m essentially looking for a semi-custom look in the old stalking rifle style.
