I spent a s few hours today with a task I undertake about once a year. That is giving my guns a once over which is essentially an oiled patch down the barrel, a bit of lubrication for the action and a wipe down with an oiled cloth. Not much but it keeps them in supreme condition. This is apart from a more complete cleaning anytime they’re used.

How often are firearms seen advertised for sale described as being in good condition just a bit of speckle on the receiver / barrel. There’s a gun that was left unattended in a safe or worse in a gun case for a long period. A gun that wasn’t valued or cared for.

Just wondering what others do to care for their prized possessions. Is a once a year cleaning enough or is it more often than necessary?

OMG a Deerfield. I needs it bad,real bad. ;) Take a Garand and a Lee Enfield No8 and maybe a Spanish FR8 ? :) I know but I had to try.
 
I like to keep all my guns oiled up, i do it at least once a month. Not that not cleaning your guns once a month is mandatory but I am just meticulous and would never want anything bad happen to my firearms. When they are cold, i let them warm up to room temp, oil them, than wipe and reoil overnight. Just the way i do things. You have some beautiful rifles in your collection :)
 
Depends on how much you shoot, what the firearm is, what your weather is like, are you using corrosive ammo and what you do with the firearm.

I'll clean some firearms after 50 rounds, others go well over 1000 rounds in between cleaning.
 
I bought a couple rifles from a collector down on the coast (B.C.) which were
displayed on the gun wall for a few years.

First thing I do is run a patch down the barrel , lube & cycle them.

The patches came thru a right rust colour and it required
a full service cleaning to make them at least shootable looking.

I called him right away , seems he was a non-shooter and hadn't touched them since
he acquired them , didn't think that humidity in the house was bad enough to corrode them.

Therefore collector , check your barrels..../ skwerl
 
I try to shoot and ware my guns out putting smiles on my face.
Clean when needed. Nothing sits around here very much.
If it dose it’s sold off.
 
I clean the barrels by shooting them. I use a rod when I get stoppages (.22) , when accuracy falls off (all others) or when they see rain or snow. They all get the oily rag from time to time, and certainly any time they have left the house. More harm than good comes from excessive cleaning in my opinion.

it's promised to my grandson when things get liquidated.

I know the Deerfield is desirable but the Carbine in front of it is nicer to use just not as convenient to load / unload.
 
Use here not much rust! I oil them regularly and clean them when needed! I keep most of them in gun socks and I have a few large bag of silica gel desiccant in the safe! Seems to do the work pretty good!!
 
Gotta a couple of the .44 Ruger tube fed. One early and one later (with unloading button in the loading area). But still looking for my Holy Grail. Thanks for the reply
