Greetings, reds!

I am split between a:

SVT40

Moisin Nagant with barrel of ammunition

SKS with barrel of ammunition

or

Lee enfield or something ( maybe a K31, but I can't find any ).

I want a fun shooting gun ( Recoil makes me happy man ), that I could also use to hunt, and carry for multi-day hikes. Weight is not too big problem.
I give the full power rifle cartridge guns a step up because lel stoppan' powa, but the concept of owning an SKS isn't averse, at all.
Any 7.62x39 expanding ammunition exist? That might be be issue.

Thanks in advance for the advice, gents!

I strongly recommend the SVT 40:
- Awesome rifle with history behind it
-7.62x54R make a great hunting round, commercial and military ammos available
-Gas system on the SVT can be adjusted to accomodate a wide range of ammo
-SVT look awesome and is well balanced. Very accurate and even the sight are not bad.
-Supply of SVT will be harder to come by so buy one now while they are available.
-Well its a "must have" rifle:D
cheers,
Joce

If it comes with a barrel of ammo, you want recoil and hunting anything, the Mosin Nagant wins hands down. I have all the models you listed, but my original Sniper MN 91/30 will stay until the end.

I have all three of your first picks, my favourite is the svt-40! I love it, probably my most accurate milsurp. Sks is a lot of fun too. Mosins are great bolt actions. My choice of picks would be svt, mosin and sks.

What is your budget ???

What will be the purpose of the rifle ???

Keep in mind that semi-auto's need more cleaning than bolt action rifles.

You should also consider a Mauser... Maybe in 8mm !!!

I like my svt40, my 3 mosin's ( Finn M39, M91 and a Russian Pu 91/30 ) and my sks but my favorite milsurp is my K31. The only problem is ammunition...

Now the SVT is a big heavy long rifle the ammo costs more to shoot. The SKS is a smaller lighter way less expensive rifle to shoot. The SKS is also easyier to clean and put aways the SVT isn't that bad its just more steps and more work.

If your hunting deer size animals the 7.62x39 is powerful enough for most things even bear.

Have you read the OP ??? He said :

Svt are big rifles but its not that heavy and like Joce said its well balanced.

SKS are gr8 rifles but with low recoil... Also you said 7.62X39 ammunition is way less expensive to shoot vs 7.62X54... That's not true, its just a little less expensive to shoot.

Look at CanadaAmmo, they sell :

1200 rounds of Non-Corosive 7.62X39 for 299$ = .25$ / round
880 rounds of Corosive 7.62X54 for 239$ = .27$ / round

Ah, ok, you guys ( and reading the rest of the forum ) convinced me ( didn't take much convincing ). I've always had a soft spot for the SVT40.
Big punch of 7.62x54R, semi automatic, and kick ass overall.

Is the 12 port better than the 4? For reducing low-light flash, recoil, etc etc. What year is gud?

Look in the Red Rifles section, there is a really nice sticky on svt's...

If you buy an Svt40, try to find one with the AVT Naval stock ;)

12 ports are early war production, can be diffcult to clean, between and fishing out patches, 4 port being late production, no idea about each ability to suppress flashes. Most svt you'll find will be 1940-1942, as production slowly decreased and later years becoming more rare.

Just pick out you like the most and has a nice clean, smooth, shiny bore.

Either muzzle brake is good but as mentionned, the 4 ports is easier to clean. Remember that wearing hearing protection is a must because the SVT is a very loud rifle. Any year are good, if you can, pick one with an AVT stock because thoses stock are stronger. The AVT "naval" stock have a sling slot like the mosin nagant instead of the regular swivel. When you get your SVT, please pics!!:D

Imho for the price of the svt you could get both the mosin which is best for hunting "just cant beat a bolt action"
And a sks which cant be beat for fun.

If you do that though you have to get a case of 7.62 x54r and x39 so logistically the svt is better

And I have the feeling that svt prices will go up much faster then mosins and sks so get it first

Oh and I forgot to add SVTs are badass in you face awesomeness

I can't add much more to the reasons posted above for the SVT-40 other than it looks cool and hasn't been as common lately in my area.

If you do get the svt, try to get the tool for adjusting the gas system.
