RIFLE COMPLETED! (UPDATED)...The M1 Garand BoB tribute rifle project

More on Black Oxide:

The black oxide process is a chemical conversion coating. This means that the black oxide is not deposited on the surface of the substrate like nickel or zinc electroplating. Instead, the black oxide coating is produced by a chemical reaction between the iron on the surface of the ferrous metal and the oxidizing salts present in the black oxide solution. These oxidizing salts include penetrates, catalysts, activators and proprietary additives which all take part in the chemical reaction. The result of this chemical reaction is the formation of black iron oxide, magnetite (Fe3O4), on the surface of the metal being coated. Black oxide has a range of unique properties and benefits that can be applied to a variety of industries.

Well boys the rifle is now completed. Once again Nick did an awesome job. The really great thing about working with Vulcan on these projects is that Nick shares the vision to take on the unusual or difficult. Nick and I just sit around over lunch and dream up these projects and he makes them happen.

Anyway here are some pictures of the rifle from various angles. I laid in Silver leaf paint into the engraving just to give it some contrast.

My next project (over the holidays) is to build a display crate for it and get that laser engraved to match.

Some details on this project. We only used Italian parts coupled with a brand new .308 Krieger barrel. The trigger group housing, bolt, hammer had the drawing numbers changed to match the rifle. So now all drawing numbered parts have the drawing number of 101AB506PIR - EC

The finish is Black Oxide over a satin polished metal. Every visible part was polished to a satin finish down to the last screw head.

Enjoy...

The receiver was tested for metallurgy, then annealed to take out the hardness. New metal added to match the metal composition, filed, polished and engraved.

The receiver was heated treated again to bring it back up to proper Rockwell hardness. Oh, and she can shoot...:D

Believe me the receiver was the lion share of the work on this project.

Black Oxide is the similar to bluing. The finish is a much deeper black than commercial gun bluing. The finish changes based on the metal prep underneath. It can look like a high polish black down to an almost flat/mat depending on what you do to the steel.

Nick and I were already talking today about doing another one as a tribute directly to John Garand...Gold inlay on that one would be dynamite!
