Have Yas ever had a few rifles set up that feels great , or have a slight wiggle to get a perfect fit...
When you then either hand the rifle to someone else and they are completely out of fit to that setup?

It makes sense I guess.... But our problem is here with the Franchi.. the drop of the butt is severe an with the QD rings on the weaver style bases , is creating a High setup, with no cheek weld for the Lady..

Some may say, well just get Low rings..
But does that actually fix the issue ??

I've had her on my Ruger, Kimber and Zasty with varying degrees of success and some not ideals...

I thought it is a LOP issue, Franchi at 13.9, with the Kimber 84m at 13.75, and the Ruger Hawkeye at 13.5 an Zasty at a 14.2 range.....

We can't move the scope back any further with the Horizon, an I don't think we would be able to with any Talley or Leupold ring setup either, ... Ideally if the bolt holes were the same, we could swap and spin the bases around an allow a bit of room to bring further back.... But that can't happen.

Now she finds the Franchi 'heavy' (which it isn't Kimber light) an dislikes no cheek weld of floating around, trying to hold up the weight off hand... (Previously shot on bench bags lay down etc) But attempting field positions close to deer season...

I'm wonder if a COMPACT model is the answer here?
Slightly shorter LOP.. less forend , shorter tube an less Overall Weight ...

Hmmm.
Whattya rekons?

We have decided she can afford to keep the Franchi for now (she has a soft spot for it) but we will handle some of these compacts in store an potentially go for One of them-- if an when we find a good setup she can either sell off the Franchi or attempt at modifying it. Eg. Barrel cut and Low Talley's.

We did buy the Franchi without feeling it an when she has time to get behind it an find a scope picture on a range, it works , but off hand an field it's not cutting it as is

I have got a Model 7 ,scoped, that a fella is willing to sell Us... It's synthetic blued (no biggy) an a burris droptine 3-9 (what we want to buy for Franchi) Franchi currently has Full field ii 3-9 on it.

She seems to think the LOP is OK on all but the cheek weld (drop of butt) is too dramatic for her an feels like she's floating.

Not opposed to changing rings out completely either as a trial but..

Thanks fellas. All advice Noted.

She likes my Kimber quite a bit but did say she kind of felt cramped down into the butt , as in opposite to what experiencing with Franchi... Hmmm.

Kimber Hunter possibly with suited height rings?

Kimber's have a very straight Butt

Cheek weld is an easy fix with a bit of foam and some tape! And then you can make a nice removable one like this one !! View attachment 916885
Yeah mate I mentioned how Foam and Glue can raise the cheek.. put a slip on ammo pouch an no one knows..
She isn't keen on that , but I said, it's practicality we are chasing here ,not aesthetics...
I might do something temporary for her next shoot.
More I think about it... Better it seems as a bit of a budget fix!

Cheers!!

take the QD rings off and set the scope on the rifle with a little spacer to level it on the rifle and hold it there while she mounts the rifle, with a cheek weld, Can she see thru the scope?
If so get proper low mount rings.

When you said odd people , I thought you where thinking wacko, but you know your wife. 🤣

Yeah good idea!
Also, the 783 with the shorter heavy barrel is on radar for a feel of it?!
Depending how heavy the front end is, at 16.5 is nice!!
They also do a 20 inch one .we will try both of these. Remove the rail an run Talleys

I know exactly what you mean. We used to have a really good gun shop in town, operated by a gunsmith, and they would set you right up. Measure your forearm for length of pull, have you shoulder the rifle so that they could set up eye relief and scope height perfectly. Trim the stock and refit the recoil pad as needed. You left there with a rifle that fit you perfectly. Sadly, they're gone now.

You can do all this yourself, but if you get it wrong, you're stuck with rings and a scope that don't work for you as good as they could, and maybe a rifle that you can't resell.

Ruger No.1s for example ... I'm average height but even with offset rings I cannot get that rifle to fit me properly, and I hate to start cutting the stock because the resale value is gone as soon as you do that.

For your Franchi, you can switch to a straight tube scope, which will give you more room to move it rearward. Not much you can do about the weight though.

A compact design is usually better for women and shorter men, especially when you add a heavy hunting jacket (which affects your length of pull and eye relief. Plus, for me anyway, a rifle cannot be too light for hunting. Even losing 2 pounds makes a huge difference when I've got to haul it around all day.

Good luck. Hope you find something that works.

For me, I use mainly older rifles that were ment for open sights I guess but most of them even with low mounts don’t offer a great cheek weld on the comb, so I have a few with added padding like the one in the picture! I also like over 14” of LOP.
My friend’s daughter that is pretty tiny I did modify the stock, shorter length of pull and a substantial comb pad to make sure she gets a good cheek weld that is on A husqvarna 1640 308!

My 783 weighed just over 7 lbs (Bare rifle) fit me well, was a good shooter and had a nice "hang" to 'er for off-hand shooting.
The plastic stock be cheapy though and can get rather flexy feelin' when using in hot climate conditions. The molded in sling swivel points I
don't trust either for long treks.

It sounds to that the Franchi is overly long, overly heavy, and stocked for iron sights. Thats not tweaking territory; thats start over with something else territory.
yeah mate i agree- this is what we are goin to initiate - but will shoulder plenty in the mean time -

fwiw, it isnt tooo long, but the forend is quite a big long one, not much longer overall than my kimber- but a much 'bigger' gun across the board.
definatly set up for irons with the butt an cheek weld area!
an the guns nice weight, until you put the bolt in lol. that thing is built for a tank.

im thinkin another look at the howa superlites / kimber hunter or model 7, m77 compact, 783 shorty, maybe another look at the ranches.
