Rifle "fitting" or "sizing" to Game

Oh? Can you provide specifics?

Below requirements in both BC and Alberta for Bison, and rightfully so, and I imagine the Yukon and NWT have Bison minimums in place as well but I haven't lived there. I believe there may be minimums in place for Grizzlies as well, but when I drew my tag I wasn't concerned about checking into it as I hunt with a .375 H&H.

Alberta has no minimum specifically for bison.

To Dogleg, fbmi, Longwalker, hoyt et al I've been minimalizing mostly just to simplify life. Realized just the ownership of guns I liked wasn't bringing me the joy hunting does, but all you guys do plenty of hunting so it's a to each their own situation. This past short while here I've sold off most of my antiques, a little Holland & Holland, Oberndorf 7x57 commercial sporter and a bunch more locally. It's made for enough surplus to hopefully book another great hunt following Lion in Feb. This said, some are in the position to own and do it all and if I wish to keep my wife happy, just not I. The one thing I've learned is good guns appreciate and they're never a bad investment, so if you enjoy em, all for it as well.

My job has me traveling all the time, not a lot different for Dogleg but be likes the home base way, and I'd like to get down to two big Pelican cases to make moving my whole battery with easy. Plan to work in Africa in the future and would like to essentially have a three gun battery to accompany, leaving little at home. We shall see shiny things keep catching my eye...

So a .270 is still ok if loaded with 175 gr and maintains 2000 ft lbs of energy at 100m.

Ever seen a 175gr .270 bullet? :) Only thing of the class I'm aware of was the Barnes 180gr Original, no longer made. Didn't stabilise well and extreme pressures due to all the bullet bearing area.

So sure, I suppose if you could find a box of the discontinued Barnes, handloaded them, you would just barely meet minimum requirements. Is it a good idea, and can it be labeled good for anything on the continent? That's subjective but in my opinion the clear answer is no.

Good for anything in North America minimum would spell .30-06 to me. Better yet, a .300 Win.

Matrix has a 175 gr .277 hunting vld bullet, but that doesn't mean I'd be flinging one at a bison...:)

As for your dilemma, go with list #1 and keep the m14.
