Rifle for daughter

I've never even heard of 7mm-08 before this topic, is it common in Canada?

Don't know how common it is back your way, but it has been loaded by Remington for about a quarter of a century. Ballistics are almost identical to the 114 year old 7X57. Some things never change.........

My daughter shot my 6.5x55 at the range when she was 12 and shot the 243 as well when she was in her 20s with no ill effects.

The 6.5 was in a full stock Model 96 Swede though, and it absorbs a lot of the recoil from a soft recoiling gun already.

I think the sporters made from military Swedes are heavier than a commercial rifle would be, but but some are very nice.

I don't have a firm recommendation, but I'd lean towards advising you to get her a 7-08 in a modern rifle. I dont necessarily agree but some will argue that the .243 is an expert's gun and you can wound game with it. Another pal argues that it just doesn't have the down-range horsepower to anchor a big mulie.

I've never lost a deer using a .243 but I have to admit I wounded and lost a black bear with it.

The best cartridge/rifle is the one the girl feels comfortable with. Let her try the light calibres that you own, then check around to find what your buddies have that she could try a couple of shots with. A 7-08 or a 7X57 out of a rifle that fits her will likely be much more tolerable than even a 243 from a rifle that isn't sized or shaped to fit her.

a nice 7 08 is a calbre she can load down now for practice and shoot full power loads later. its a calibre that she could use for years to come even on moose.
