Rifle for Girlfriend

By the title, I thought I was going to read a WTT ad... Trade rifle for girlfriend... I was trying to decide what rifle I would take as fair trade.

but have you asked her what she wants?
maybe she doesnt like a bolt action and wants a semi or pump?
maybe she wants a classic single shot like a Ruger #1?

women are funny in that they tend to form opinions on little things men might see as insignificant: like the color of something or how 'cute' it is - and that forms part of their enthusiasm towards a sport. for example, my g/f thought that snowshoeing was lame back when i was using modern style snowshoes -- i bought her a pair of nice classic wooden/rawhide-laced ones as a gift, and she went nuts over them and was all of a sudden enthusiastic about going out snowshoeing.
same with guns - a woman might hate one with a black synthetic stock but show her the exact same gun with a forest laminate stock on it and shell immediately fall in love with it and 'claim' it as hers :D
so even if what she wants isnt your idea of the right gun, or costs a bit more than you were planning to spend, you may be better off not forcing her into getting what you think she should have and getting her what she really wants so that she stays enthusiastic about the whole thing. i wish women werent so complicated though :p

Now this is the truth! Good excuse to spend lots of time with her in a gun shop I'd say!

My girlfriend has been enjoying her shotgun through last season and would now like to have a centrefire rifle for range shooting, deer, moose, bear hunting.

Had a lot of good opinions on CGN with options for a shotgun last year so thought I would ask again, this time for a rifle.

She is petite, so please keep this in mind....and the reason I am asking.

We have only seen the Remington Model 7 which seems to be a smaller rifle, however want to make sure all options are looked at.

So, looking for a smaller rifle, light weight in a bolt action.

She is not recoil sensitive (BONUS), so we need not discuss caliber.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Ill trade my girlfriend for a rifle!

can she cook? if so I'll give you a 94 in 30-30 if not maybe an sks. Seriously though a 7-08 would be a great choice. If you could find one in a mod.7 I think that would be ideal.

I agree taking her into a gun shop and having her look at all the different models may be the best thing to do.

I bought a rifle for my wife and it turned out she didn't like it at all so I finally sold it.

I'm thinking the next time I get her into a gun shop I'll get her to look for herself maybe I'll luck out and she will like one...

calibre would be 7/08 in a second,is what my wife shoots in a compact model 77 ruger and she loves it!
as for the gun for her let her pick what she likes, since she most likely the one to be shooting it.lol
took me 3 years to find one the wife liked, but the good part is i ended up with a couple great rifles!

MY wife enjoys her Rem 700 SPS with hinge plate...she also likes my T/C Pro Hunter...both are 7mm-08 Remingtons...and in her hands anything she points her Remington at dies. period.

But I agree, let her pick it out and handle them all...but explain to her the virtues of each action type...enjoy.

Weatherby's Vanguard comes in a Compact version. Short action only, Wholesale Sports lists it in .243, 7mm-08, and .308, (and a couple of varmint calibres) just under $700. Overall length is just under 40", barrel is 20", LOP is 12.5".

:D

I have an older Remington Model 7 (one of the originals) with a Schnabel fore-end (walnut stock) and a 18.5" barrel in .308 Win.

It's light as a feather (5.5 lbs.) & shoots like a dream (1/2" groups with factory Federal "High Energy" rounds loaded with 180 grain Nosler Partition bullets) after I removed the contact points & free floated the barrel & installed an adjustable Timney trigger.

Has a 2-7x33 Leupold on top.

Perfect gun for a smaller man or a woman.

It's had less than 4 boxes of ammo through it & is "blooded" (killed 2 deer on Manitoulin Island).

Try to find a Steyr-Mannlicher L carbine for her. It is a real gun - wood and steel - and they are very good quality. You should be able to find one for quite a bit less than a new Sako 85 and man do they ever shoot. If possible buy a Luxus model as they have (imho) a better magazine and the stock is slimmer.

These were very expensive rifles in their day - as a comparison my Mannlicher Luxus was more than 2.5x the price of my Sako Fiberclass in .338 - both purchased new at the same shop. It may be a long search (unless you have Clay bring one in from the states) but the end result will be worth it.

Here is are a couple of examples:

I prefer the oil finish, but here is a glossy stock:

Those Model Seven CDLs are sweet rifles. They handle better than the shorter M7s and are nicer to look at to boot. Comes with a good pad and work very well with a Leupold 2x7.

Get her one in a 7/08 and it will everything she needs it for. You might like it too. ;)

I had a 788 in 7-08 done up for my wife, carbine model, with the barrel flutted, and stock shortened 1". She got her first deer, a 10pt buck (5X5) on the run at 220 yards. Gotta watch the wife jokes, this gal can shoot! The newer 7's are a great rifle as well, I just wanted something with a clip, and this one literally fell into my lap when a fellow shooter's wife passed away. Carry on the heritage!

As a suggestion, If you hurry, Gobles has a sale on the Weatherby Vanguard 7-08 carbines, 20" barrel and iron sights, under 500. This week only.

You're girlfriend thinks snowshoeing is for tools, so you buy her a pair of snowshoes? And a gift no less? You're lucky you didn't have to pick them out of your butt.
But i do agree with spending some time in a gun store, let them pick out their own stuff. The support of the sales staff and yourself will eventually get the right equipment for the job. Buying her something that was suggested by poll doesn't go over big. Don't underestimate the girls.

I bought my 16 yr old daughter a huskie in 6.5x55 this fall when we were drawn for moose. She is not a very big girl and she has no problem with the little bit of recoil from it and it shoots great. I think I might have to borrow it once in a while;) as I like it to much to leave it in the gun safe for to long at a time.
